What started out as a 5,000 mile road trip in pursuit of the best Nashville Hot style chicken, turned into a quest to create some of his own. And after 3 weeks of outbound tasting, and 3 months of in-kitchen testing, Big Dean’s Hot Chicken was born. The limited menu at Big Dean’s (chicken, slaw and fries) is intentional. The quality of food is wonderful. I think one of the best in state college. It is very much comparable to Dave’s. The toilets were not clean, it was less lit in general, and seating is not comfortable. There is no issue with the food! Overall, for the price, I think they are doing a phenomenal job. Good luck Big D’s fam. I hope to see you grow in PA, and beyond.

I unfortunately did not have a good experience at Big Deans, and I have a laundry list with it. Let’s start with manner and human decency. Since we came in at 8:40, we all got looked at as if we had ten heads. The anger was written all over their faces. After waiting for the food for roughly 15 minutes, we were essentially pushed out since they really needed to close as soon as possible, for whatever reason. Now moving forward to the food, I’m not sure if you’ve cleaned your fryer recently, but it tasted like the oil was three months old. After having one tender, I felt sick to my stomach, feeling like a pit had entered my stomach. I am truly disappointed and disgusted by the way we were treated, and their lack of food quality. Don’t waste your time going here, unless you’re seeking a “good” attitude.

The chicken is over cooked which makes it tough. Nothing worse than biting into a tough piece of chicken that immediately makes you want to spit it out. Fries.. meh. Nobody likes crinkle cut, change to waffle or curly. Cheese sauce should come on the side. Sauces are good but the first bite of the chicken I had was so tough I almost didn’t go back in for another bite. I was brave enough to go back in and on my 3rd tender I was met again with a tough chewy tender and I proceeded to spit and throw the rest away.

This was our first visit, and we will definitely return! We were not greeted upon arrival, so we opted to order from self-serve kiosks. We had to get the lone employee’s attention to request cups for fountain drinks. The location was clean and well-maintained, but the music was uncomfortably loud. The food was served very hot and fresh, and our order was mostly accurate (they switched my plain fries with my husband’s cheese fries). The chicken was markedly moist and easily identifiable as real meat. The breading was light and flavorful on the tenders I ordered, and it was not excessively greasy. The bbq sauce served with the tenders was very good. My husband had a buffalo chicken sandwich that was evenly sauced and tasty. Overall, this was an enjoyable visit, and we look forward to trying additional menu items.

Big Dean’s Hot Chicken is my favorite restaurant in state college, largely due to supervisor Joel. Every time I visit and he’s working, a smile crosses my face. He’s so approachable and always quick to help when I need anything, his service is impeccable. Thank you Big Dean’s for employing such kind staff, my experience is always amazing. The only thing better than the chicken at this restaurant is the employees and service. 10/10 chicken, 10/10 service!

Just went for my fourth time and honestly this chicken sandwich is one of the best I’ve ever had. The chicken is so moist, but with a crunchy breading. You can select your spice level, so you can actually get tasty, spicy food in State College. This is definitely the best chicken sandwich in State College.

This is the best chicken I’ve ever tasted. Crispy, Nashville hot is a good choice for spiciness- good kick but manageable. The crinkle cut fries have a dusting of something that gives it a good flavor/ kick as well. Ranch has a dil flavor to it, the bbq has a kick, and the secret sauce is to die for! Tastes like Mac sauce. Will be coming back again.

We went there on a not so busy hour so food was fast and envirnment was calm. Im only taking a star because the bathrooms were very dirty and they smell, which throws off the vibe since the place itself looks very nice. About the food, hands down the best chicken sandwich ive ever had. I had the hor honey chicken sandwich with the fries. BUSSIN. So good. Will definitely come back.
