Schwan’s Recreation is a true hidden gem and a classic slice of Americana right in the heart of Aberdeen! We stopped by based on a local recommendation, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The atmosphere is fantastic it has that cozy, retro vibe, is spotlessly clean, and feels incredibly welcoming. The staff was wonderful; they greeted us with a smile and provided quick, attentive service. The food was the highlight, though—the burgers and milkshakes are absolutely legendary. Being conveniently located on 1st Avenue makes it easy to find with plenty of parking nearby. It’s the perfect spot for a family meal or catching up with friends. We’ll definitely be back!

We were told on numerous occasions around 1250am that they were closing. Just irritating when your website states you are open til 2am. If that is not the case…set your closing time to bartenders discretion. Or simply label it “til Close” rather than til 2am.

Wife and I stopped there this evening to get away from the house, a very rare occasion. We tried the spicy cheese cubes which were excellent. The chicken gizzards were the best I’ve had in years. The chislic was also top notch. Unfortunately I can’t name any of the staff but from what I saw there were 3 people working and everyone of them came to every table I could see to check on the customers very frequently and all of them were very friendly I might also add that it may not have been extremely busy but there only 4 tables empty and the seating at the bar was mostly full. Awesome food great service definitely one of the best places in Aberdeen.

Update (11/29/24) No longer serving the fried gizzards. Apparently, there was a change in suppliers and the end product is not as good. Bummer.

This place is one of the few “mom & pop / neighborhood bar and grill” places left. It remains one of the hallmarks of our hometown small businesses.
When I came back to visit my dad, he asked if I’d like to go out for lunch, and have the best burgers in town. Of course I thought he was mildly exaggerating. Well you guessed it, I was wrong and dad was right.
“I should have listened to him more often”.
That day not only did I have a great burger, but I had a great memory with my dad.
