Sumo Sushi and Japanese Restaurant is a casual spot that specializes in both traditional Japanese cuisine and fusion-style sushi. Located in Village West on Tilghman Street, it’s open Monday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Friday from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Saturday from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

I was looking for a place to grab dinner before going to the movies, and since I hadn’t had sushi in a while, I decided to give Sumo a try.

Kicked things off with the crispy calamari, which was perfectly fried. It’s a familiar favorite, served with a sweet chili sauce that complements it nicely.

Next up were the Kani salad and seafood miso soup. While the soup was loaded with seafood, both dishes were fairly average and a bit bland.

For the main event, sushi! I tried the Sumo Roll, with spicy crunchy salmon and avocado inside, topped with seared salmon, white tuna, crispy rice ball, and tobiko with the chef’s special sauce. I also had the Cracked Lobster Roll, filled with spicy shrimp and lobster, sweet potato tempura, and topped with Kani salad and a Japanese cracker with garlic mango sauce. Both were fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented.

Overall, everything was enjoyable. I’d rank Sumo somewhere in the middle among the sushi spots I’ve tried.

We came at lunch and got Sushi for 2. It was a big enough portion for the two of us. It offered a choice of miso soup or ginger salad before hand. The miso soup was good. The platter was ok, with some sushi being better than others. I felt the green and cream color sauce was a bit off putting because it looked like tooth paste. The assortment of sushi was nice. I liked their attention to refilling drinks and that the diet Pepsi came with lemons.

I had such a fantastic experience at Sumo Sushi in Allentown! From the moment the food arrived, I was impressed—the display and presentation were absolutely top-notch, almost too beautiful to eat. Every single dish tasted just as good as it looked—fresh, flavorful, and prepared with real care. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the service made the meal even better. I’m already looking forward to my next visit—this is definitely my new go-to spot for sushi in the Lehigh Valley!

Despite arriving for a very late dinner ( after 7pm), midweek, we were seated immediately. They were very busy and we were seated in the back room ( quieter, with less tables/ patrons). We all enjoyed our food: fresh ingredients, and portions were good size and wow- thr presentation of the food was fabulous. While, I ordered a spicy dish- I thought it was sweet vs spicy but I have a high tolerance for spicy foods ( usually eat Thai spicy).

Fast service, although the staff wasn’t overly friendly, just kind of neutral. That said, the food was excellent! Sushi was super fresh with a great variety to choose from. We sat outside, which was nice even in the strip mall setting. Love that it’s BYOB. We will definitely return!

Sumo Sushi & Japanese Cuisine was an interesting stop small spot but full of energy. Despite how packed the place was, we were seated almost immediately, which was a nice surprise. The food was fresh across the board and came dressed up with eye catching touches; think tiny flowers, glowing ice, and a bit of flair that made the dishes pop.

I went with the fried rock shrimp, the Sumo Roll, and a spicy tuna roll. All solid choices. My current wife (who hasn’t left me yet even though I keep making tiktoc references despite my elder age) had the grilled scallops to start and beef fried rice as her main. She seemed pleased, so I chalk that up as another win for me.

The place definitely leans on the visual side of presentation, which added to the experience, but the atmosphere was a bit loud, and the service ran slow, not unexpected given the crowd. All in all, a cool little spot with unique vibes and good food. Just expect a little wait if it’s peak hours.

Looks unassuming and small on the outside. Very modern, elegant, and spacious inside. Very innovative & unique fusion choices. Loved the sushi and appetizers. Will definitely be back! Loved the chu chu lobster, wasabi tuna dumplings, & American Dream roll.

Loved this restaurant and the food, until this last month , February 2026, they have cut the size portions in HALF …..dumplings are much smaller,The sashimi is so thin It flops around when you’re trying to pick it up-Nothing to bite into . .
❤️❤️❤️❤️ . Went to Liu’s last night last night…. ,not as nice atmosphere, BUT the sashimi was DOUBLE THE THICKNESS,dumplings MUCH bigger. ❤️
Will miss SUMO

My husband and I get sushi here often, and it’s one of our favorite places. Definitely give this place a try if you haven’t yet!
The sushi is very good. Their variety is really nice, with lots of other asian fusion dishes. I especially like their chicken lettuce wrap! The sauce is flavorful, a bit sweet and with just enough spice. The owner is very kind, and accommodated me by offering gluten free soy sauce!

The food was quite tasty and arrived quickly even though it was a holiday. Be aware that they don’t do their lunch specials on special days like holidays. We didn’t know at first, but told us when we were seated and it was fine.
They have a good menu and prices are good ($4.95 for an avocado roll as of this review). I got the sushi combo B. It was very tasty but I’ll tell you that the rice for the sushi was sweeter than I’m used to. It wasn’t bad or anything, but it’s something to be aware of if you’re particular about your sushi rice.
