We had heard Castaways Pub was pretty good and we pass it weekly on our way home from Church in Lavalette. My wife order the onion soup, hers had barely any cheese but a friend of the owners was loaded with cheese. I ordered the Coconut Seafood Chowder, first bad impression was when I came up with just a shrimp tail on my spoon. Did someone bite off the shrimp and throw the tail back in??? Was supposed to be lumped with Cod fish and shrimp. I had one small piece of fish which I do not believe was Cod, very thin and was showing a dark blood line which I have never had in Cod when I caught and fileted many times. I would not waste $14 dollars on this bowl of soup that had less than one shrimp, a shrimp tail and a tiny piece of Tilapia. My wife’s steak sandwich was bland and she asked for horseradish sauce, they bought plain horseradish. There was no garlic taste from the broccoli rabe. Let’s not even talk about my shredded pork meat tacos. I probably wouldn’t come here again.

Had a really nice experience here on a Thursday after Labor Day. We were seated quickly and our service was good. We both enjoyed our meals (burger/steak sandwich) and drinks (beer/wine). The patio bar was perfect for a warm night and look forward to coming back in the winter to check out the inside. The only reason not giving 5* is that it was on the expensive side for 2 sandwiches, a side of fries, 2 beers and 2 wines – $90 including tip. See ya soon.

My absolute favorite place in Lavallette. The food is always SO good (and elevated beyond!) the ambience is great. Sitting outside in the summer is the best. They also have outdoor seating in the fall and winter with heat lamps. They offer live music a lot. They are kid friendly. Great menu options. Good cocktails, great selection of beers. The service is great. Cannot say enough good things about Castaways, a great addition to the area!

. I had the bacon bleu burger and my wife had the fish taco both were awful didn’t even eat it. Told the waitress who apologized numerous times I paid the bill. I gave the waitress a good tip wasn’t her fault. I don’t understand how food could be that bad. Please do not waste your money or time. This place is way too expensive for the non quality of food.

Great little neighborhood feel pub. Food is constantly good as are the drinks. Summers and warmer weather has the outside opened up as well with entertainment. If you are in Lavallette area, it is definitely worth a try.

Fun place, but a bit overpriced. Didn’t get a chance to sample the food, was a bit too crowded. Outdoor bars were neat too. Only real complaint is that they charge a fee to use your credit card.. that’s unacceptable. No one uses or carries cash these days, and any fee associated with credit card use needs to be absorbed by the establishment, NOT the customer. Aside from that, I’d still come back, but only if someone else is paying.

2024: 1st thing = staff here is the Most Accommodating ever! Nothing goes unsettled.
Cold = you get a heater.
Margarita was bitter, I got Agave Syrup made it perfect!
Bergers were to be medium but were well-done = yet I still liked it.
2025 – This is a Real Chef, doing things outside the box of NJ norms.
Erin was totally on my side lol, shes awesome.
I did Thai Chili/Garlic Shrimp
While a soupy sauce, it was really done well with the bread. The bread is the key.
The Fish Taco: unlike ANY place. The use of fennel was a shock to me as its very powerful and can trump flavors. The cabbage was not as Slaw as i thought… I think i would do pickled onions … but this chef is a gambler!… so without the lime it’s strong fennel. Adding lime and salt it was amazing.
I will always come to this place because it’s not following traditional junk cookie cutter menus.
I do hate the drinks being in plastic cups, especially when windy.

Had appetizers and cocktails yesterday afternoon. Ordered the nachos OMG the best we’ve had! Crab cakes were delicious but could be a bit larger portion size for the cost, and the bacon blue salad was yummy and large so can easily be divided. Looking forward to trying dinner. Outdoor seating was refreshing, perfect September weather!

Food started off good, my significant other and I went for dinner on June 12th around 6pm. We ordered mozzarella sticks, mac n cheese which was amazing. But when it came to our actual meals, I ordered a NY strip steak and i specifically asked for it to be medium rare. My server was Lisa who by the way repeated “medium rare” as she was writing. Lisa was absolutely nice but had poor customer service. Anyway, they gave me this Ny strip steak. Does this look like medium rare? No. It’s was well done. We asked for a manager or someone to talk to and no one came to us. All we got was a sorry and if we wanted another steak. I paid $39 for this steak. Wasn’t removed or comp. I expected to paid the fries that came with it but the overall well done dry steak too? I left my phone number on the receipt because I do expect to speak to someone since I didn’t get to tonight. I’m very ashamed I had to end my night down the shore with a poor dinner.
