Chinese food in Madison is very hit or miss in my opinion. So I’m always on the lookout for different restaurants to try. China star was next on my list and it didn’t disappoint. Now it does have its differences than other Madison Chinese restaurants. I would compare this to a Chicago Chinese restaurant. The fried rice doesn’t have peas and carrots, and a lot of dishes have sprouts which is a plus in my book. The egg rolls were perfectly prepared and the egg foo young (complete with sprouts), was very fulfilling. The beef and broccoli were pretty basic but the meat was very tender and flavorful. Definitely would recommend and plan to go back to try more dishes!

Even one star is great enought. Whole the menu is changed and portions is changed. We had 2 rice and came one rice. When we called they said its large dize but it wasnt.

I’m pretty surprised about the food that I got this evening as I do order frequently not a lot but frequently from China Star here in Monona. I’ve never had a reason to complain before but I just have to share this. I ordered the Mongolian chicken and it tasted good but I had eaten about a bowl or so and found literally VERY little chicken but onions were not in short supply. The photos show the truth. Onions galore but very little chicken. I think I mistakenly ordered the Mongolian onion dish. Disappointed to say the least. I understand that things have gotten more expensive and especially chicken might be in short supply but I also value my money and what it can buy me and this was just not a good value at all.
Not sure I’ll go back there and that is disappointing to me as I really like their Mei fun and shrimp fried rice.

Incredible portion size and value for money from this Chinese restaurant. We ordered two entrees with rice, the to-go bag was downright heavy, and the cost was a mere twenty dollar bill. Tried the hot chicken and vegetable and the moo goo gai pan, both of which were very good. There was enough for a large dinner with leftovers for next day’s lunch!
The last talking phone orders spoke perfect English and was a joy to speak with. The pick up window takes every Covid-19 precaution possible. Great place overall!

I ordered the bourbon chicken. It was the worst bourbon chicken I have ever had, hands down. The chicken was so dry and hard that it could have been smothered in the finest sauce in the world and it wouldn’t have mattered. It hurt swallowing it. It was also supposed to come with steamed rice and I asked for an additional side of fried rice. Based on what I paid, I paid for the fried rice in addition to the bourbon chicken, which is what I asked for and would have been fine, except they skipped out on the steamed rice, so I didn’t even get that. I would not recommend this place

We ordered egg rolls and they were the best we’ve ever had! The shrimp fried rice and orange chicken both had huge portions and was excellent! We’ll have enough for at least one more meal.We will definitely come back here if we’re in the area again. I would highly recommend.

Today I ordered my usual beef fried rice, egg rolls and beef egg foo young. The food was delicious and EXCELLENT as it always is!! Everything was very tasteful!! Hands down this is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Madison. It tastes the exact same as the old restaurant Ruby’s. The only difference is the name. If you’re looking for good, authentic Chinese food this is definitely the place to go!! Five stars across the board from me and my family!!

The best Chinese food around! Trust me when I say China Star never disappoints. The portions are big and the food quality is always the best.
