Social Profile:

The Lumberjack Tavern is more than just a fun place to grab a drink and a bite to eat, it’s a slice of local history and popular culture. The Tavern was first opened in 1938 as Rose’s Tavern, as was renamed Lumberjack Tavern as a nod to the area’s logging history and the famous lumberjacks. In 1952, it was the site of a famous murder, which inspired the award-winning film Anatomy of a Murder starring Jimmy Stewart. Jeff Daniel’s favorite bar in the UP, the Lumberjack also inspired the Big Bay Shuffle. Today, you can enjoy a taste of UP craft beer, burgers, hand-cut fries, house-made pizza, and the seasonal menu. The Lumberjack also has onsite accommodations. Catch owner Jack who’ll regale you stories of the bar & Big Bay history.

Super chill place to eat and grab a drink. Friendly people our glasses never empty, they were on top of things. We enjoyed the atmosphere and laughs echoing.

Pretty decent pizza and cool history/environment! They do have live music on weekends, but it was near impossible to hear each other or our poor server (who did great)

If you enjoy a tavern atmosphere belly up to the bar and enjoy. Great service, good people and a great murder back story. Stop there or be square

We went to see the home of Anatomy of Murder And enjoyed the pizza and brew. There’s a nice new scrap book containing real crime scene photos from the day. You can even lie in the floor where the owner was gunned down. I hear many women in wedding dresses get their pic there too. Only a couple patrons the day we were there. It’s very nice inside with plenty of info

this place kicks ass. the best of the U.P. all distilled down into one perfect dive bar. if you’re in Big Bay and you don’t stop for a drink at the Lumberjack, you messed up badly.

Decor was cool – lots of antique chainsaws and items hanging from the ceiling and historic pictures and items on the wall. We had a burger and it was good. Unfortunately we didn’t get to spend a lot of time there as they closed early (8:30 pm).

My wife and were having a sightseeing drive along Big Bay road and stopped in for lunch. The owner of the establishment gave us a detailed rundown of the places history. Cool motifs all throughout. Stop by if you’re around and have a drink.
