-Because the cheesesteaks are good enough to transport you directly to America’s former capital city, Philadelphia;
-And, after you’ve two-fisted your way through this decadent, toothsome and rib-sticking sandwich, you’ll wanna make like ROCKY BALBOA and do a celebratory sprint up those very same stairs!
Your favorite Yelp correspondent loves a well made cheesesteak, has enjoyed authentic ones from both Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s in the City of Brotherly Love plus every west coast -no pun intended!- variant of the same. Philly’s Best, Charley’s Cheesesteaks and the Bronx Deli. And several others.
I’m here to proclaim (loudly!) that West Coast Cheesesteaks makes the very best Philly style cheesesteak…that I’ve ever enjoyed on, well, the West Coast.
I ordered the West Coast Special, size large. It features the obligatory razor-thin slices of certified angus beef, onions, mushrooms, peppers, jalapeños and your choice of several cheeses (provolone, cheddar, poblano and chipotle). I’m a purist, so I selected provolone for mine.
The bread is undoubtedly like a good woman- Strong and sturdy enough to cradle its copious fillings, yet soft enough to engender affection. Lovingly dusted with cornmeal, which creates a wonderful final textural note for your mouth.
The taste had me grinning like a banshee at my good fortune. Owner/Chefs Michael and Jessica have clearly done their homework. The ratio of steak to onions to peppers/shrooms seems mathematically precise and extremely well balanced. Ditto with the melted provolone.
Can’t tellya how many pretend hoagies I’ve had where the portions are outtve balance and you wind up with an overpriced cheese or mushroom-forward sando.
Size-wise? You’ll get your hard-earned money’s worth. These are not the slightly thin hoagies churned out by Philly’s Best nor will they try to be cute and hide the (pricier) meat under a blanket of cheese and onions (looking at you, Charley’s!).
West Coast Cheesesteaks are bona fide TWO-FISTERS! Lovingly crammed to its depths with unctuous layers of equable flavors that actually complement each other.
The service I experienced during my visit was exemplary. The young man (no visible name tag but dark haired with a sleight frame) who took my order was very nice. He repeated my order back to me for accuracy and even graciously offered me a water cup during my brief (less than 5 mins) wait.
Today’s meal cost $19.27, incl taxes and tip.
In closing, I’ll say that I wanna pinch myself.
I mean, your correspondent here has in the past been known to risk missing a connecting flight during a layover at PHL (Philadelphia Airport) to hire a cabby to drive me the ten miles to Pat’s King of Steaks then WAIT FOR MY ORDER! (Eagle-eyed Yelpers: This preceded 9/11 and the subsequent airport security changes governing reentry, etc).
So to learn I can now recreate the divine, uniquely Philly experience of enjoying WELL MADE cheesesteaks without flying to Pennsylvania? And it’s only eight or so miles from my Diamond Bar home??!
Quick! Where are those steps?! I’m ready to sprint up ’em, arms propelled skyward in triumph
I decided to return. This time only to be extremely disappointed. i ordered “the big one” with half cheddar half poblano. The texture of the poblano sauce needs some major reconstructing because it’s disgusting. I immediately went back and asked for just cheddar.
They were polite about remaking it after the chef gave me an entire speech on why they don’t mix cheeses. The 2nd sandwich came out worse than the first. Smh. It was so runny the entire thing was soggy. And this was upon me walking from the restaurant to my car to open it.
Defeated and annoyed i just considered it a loss and a lesson learned that i won’t be back.
I also complained about them putting the cheese sauce at the top (it sits on the bread) instead of in the sandwich they try and tell you it’s mixed in which it isn’t. They scrape the meat from the grill then pour the sauce ON TOP making for an even soggier mess.
Overall 0/10
Pro Tip: you don’t need to order the “big one” they give you the same portion in each and sandwich. Save your money
I’ll start with the good: their bread was fantastic, sturdy, good check, held the fillings well The steak and cheese also good, no complaints.
The bad: really only one thing ruined my sandwich, the onions. They over caramelized them. When I got my sandwich I noticed it looked a lot more brown than I was expecting, almost like it has a brown paste on it. These onions were over cooked and bitter, and made it very hard to ignore as a chowed down. Had the onions been just lightly grilled this would have been killer. Sad I drove 1.5 hours to be disappointed l.
Now for the food. I think the bread makes the sandwich. It’s soft and chewy and holds up to the meat and cheese. The meat itself was delicious. Not fatty or grissly and very tender. I don’t think you need to order extra meat, although they have that option. The poblano cheese was delicious. I really couldn’t taste the poblano on the sandwich with cheese on it l, but when I dipped the tots in the side order of cheese for the second sandwich, the flavors were much more obvious and the sauce poblano flavors really popped. I put all the veggies on my half and they flavors really go well together. If I ever decide to get my own sandwich, I think I will order with everything on it so I can just bite into right away. If you are a newbie like me, try everything on the side and experiment like I did.
Well deserved 5 stars. Food was delicious and service over the top. I’m a fan.
I haven’t had cheese steak since I visited Philly years ago. The cheese steak was huge and super fresh, I have enough for tomorrow’s lunch now.
They were out of some of the drinks and poblano sauce, but was reccomended to get the cheddar sauce.
It’s quite hot/stuffy inside, would recommend sitting outside.
