We stopped at City Meat Market in Giddings hoping for that iconic Central Texas barbecue experience. While the history and charm of this old-school spot still shine, the food didn’t quite live up to the legend on this visit.
We ordered brisket, sausage, and ribs. The brisket was a bit on the dry side, and the sausage—while flavorful—was overly greasy. The ribs were the standout: tender, smoky, and packed with flavor. The potato salad leaned more toward mashed potatoes in texture, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea. The real winner of the plate? The beans—hearty, seasoned just right, and full of comfort.
Washed it all down with an ice-cold Dr Pepper, which helped bring the whole Texas experience full circle.
Still worth a stop for the history and the small-town charm, but the food could use a little tuning up to match its legendary reputation.
Stopped by City Meat Market in Giddings, TX early in the morning (around 8:00 a.m.) because I needed something quick, filling, and high in protein before a long day of online gaming. Most BBQ places weren’t open yet, but City Meat Market was — and I’m glad they were.
I called ahead to make sure they had what I was looking for, and the staff over the phone was respectful, knowledgeable, and helpful. When I arrived, the in-store staff was just as great. Everyone was extremely friendly and took the time to help me choose the right type and amount of meat so I wouldn’t overpay, which I really appreciated.
Everything was already cooked and ready to go, making the whole experience quick and easy. The atmosphere has a cool old-time, classic meat market feel. The layout was a little confusing at first, but the staff guided me step-by-step all the way to the back where the food is ordered, so it wasn’t an issue at all.
Payment was simple (cash or card), and checkout was smooth. There wasn’t much foot traffic at the time, but that’s understandable given how early it was — I’m probably one of the few people craving BBQ at 8 in the morning.
Overall, excellent service, great food, and a welcoming experience. Very high rating from me, and I’ll definitely be back.
Brisket was ok, center of the brisket strip was a little bit on the dryer side, with the sauce it was great. Don’t get me wrong it still had a great taste just a bit dry on the center.
The atmosphere can’t be beat. This is the type of place that makes a great pit stop for lunch, you can just feel the history in the building and see it on the walls. The owners are very nice and knowledgeable.
You have to try the sauce that they have on the tables that gets hotter the more you shake it!
No beef ribs. ☹️
Also would have liked to have known how much the items were prior to ordering. They just had a sign but no prices.
