Went with a group of five on a Thursday night and quickly got a table. We shared the crab dip for an app. That was very good as was the bread. I had the bolognese which was also very good. Other members of our group had the salmon, chicken and tuna salad which we were a bit underwhelming especially for the price. Our server was very friendly, funny and nice which we enjoyed but I think for the upscale vibe the service could’ve been elevated a little like having servers box leftover meals up. All and all a good meal but I wouldn’t have to go back.

The salmon was too die for
Madison was an amazing waitress.
The bonanza red wine was delicious.
Dinner outside, on the second floor was a great way to take in state college.

Can’t wait to come back here, it’s got a lot of history I’d like to take in. The food was delicious. I ordered the pub burger medium. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a bit of a higher level sit down dinner in downtown State College.

Overall underwhelming birthday meal at The Tavern. Made a reservation for 2 about an hour ahead of time (weeknight) & noted it was a birthday celebration. Started with Surf & Turf Eggrolls, cheese overpowered the flavor of the steak & shrimp, and $20 for 2 egg rolls sliced into 4 pieces total seems a little steep. Entrees were the linguine alla vongole— pleasantly surprising amount of clams included, however the white wine garlic butter sauce left a lot to be desired. A fine dish, but certainly not wowed by the flavor profile. My date ordered the burger (not a picky eater but their offerings are not really his style) and paid $2 extra to have what appeared to be a 1/2 slice of cheese on a $22 burger (chips included as side). Server was kind but not the most attentive. Worked in the service industry in numerous settings and expected better service & more wow factor flavors for a $75 meal for two pre-tip (no alcohol— 1 app + 2 entrees). Did not ask about any birthday dessert offerings & server did not mention anything, which either they don’t do anything special or it was not communicated by the host to the server. We save nice dinners out for special occasions in our household, we could afford to go out more but choose to eat healthy & cook at home and unfortunately The Tavern will not be on the top of the list to return to any time soon.
The last time I went to the Tavern was Jan earlier this year (celebrating a friend’s bday) & we were seated in a semi-private feeling alcove with a large party (10-12) that was extremely loud. Another 2 top was seated behind us and they immediately asked to be seated elsewhere. It felt like our server forgot about us tucked away in that area and again, for the claims to be one of the nicer restaurants in town, expected more of the food & the service during that visit too.

Our family had a great dinner together at The Tavern, after a Penn State event. Service was attentive and nice. We were glad we checked out this longtime restaurant when visiting campus. Excellent bar drinks. We would return to enjoy a drink in the bar.

Wow, great venue, great food, great service! We enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner. Attentive service, delicious food, and the libations were pleasant. Enjoyed the Lobster Cobb salad, so much of a feast within the salad it was hard to finish and Hubby had steak added to his salad, special note, they include an entire steak, not just a few stingy slices of steak like many restaurants. Both salads were so good. The venue is beautiful with indoor and outdoor seating. Definitely worth a visit!!

The food was excellent and our waiter was amazing! It’s a little pricey but expected for the quality of the food. We had a group of 9 and shared appetizers, and each had a dinner. My daughter was excited there was steak on the kids menu, and she ate the 6 oz beauty cooked to medium rare perfection! Bon Appétit! Too full for dessert, unfortunately!

A beautiful centrally located establishment. I went there for a lunch meeting. That was my mistake. They only had two sandwiches available: A vegan burger and Wagyu burger. Isn’t an 80/20 hamburger greasy enough? My friend ordered the Wagyu burger. After he took a few bites, I asked him how was it. He said greasy. What would you expect when it has got to be at least 60/40? I ordered seared bacon wrapped scallops over grits. I got two what I would estimate 20 count scallops over cheese grits. For the money, I thought the scallops were a diminutive portion. The grits were excellent. I would have ordered a cob salad or Houston salad but the salad offerings were eclectic. Another restaurant where the chef tells you what you should eat instead of doing a survey before menu items are selected. I will definitely not go back and will be one of the customers that cannot recommend the place.

Beautiful and delicious food, in a classy place.
We ate upstairs, which was surprisingly quiet for being so near a main thoroughfare. The staff were great, and attentive.
The only problem we had was that the tables we were at were very wobbly, which was a little frustrating.
