Dropped in here on a tip from a coworker and I was not disappointed!
The pupusas are well priced, which is part of why I underestimated their size and ordered three! I’ll probably stick to just two next time to be safe as they were a little larger than they appeared in the pictures,
I ordered a pork, chicken, and spinach, pupusa which were served hot and fresh with accompanying sauces and veggie toppings. I’d definitely recommend Pork out of the three I tried but I thoroughly enjoyed the spinach as well.
It’s a nice clean family owned restaurant with a nice view and a patio for those nicer summer days. The staff are polite and even take time to tell you about the food if your interestedand have never had it before. I’ll definitely be bringing friends and family back here when I can.

Quick lunch on way to drop someone off at airport- super good! We tried sampler platter and several other dishes. The staff was attentive. Super clean place and easy to talk.

I tried pupusas for the first time in my life at this restaurant, and overall, it was a good experience. The pupusas were served hot and fresh. I ordered a variety of flavors, including chicken, pork, and garlic. They all have very enjoyable taste, and what I really liked is the dough. It was nicely cooked, very soft.
However, the amount of protein inside the pupusas was a bit disappointing. The fillings were tasty, but there were only a few small pieces of chicken and pork in each one. I was hoping for a more generous portion of meat. But the cheese inside was great.

I also tried their beef fajita. It was very good, well-seasoned and cooked just right. The beef was tender and not too chewy, which I appreciated. It came with a nice mix of vegetables. When we were there, there were only one waitress and she was friendly, though we did have to wait about 15–20 minutes for our order, which felt a bit long. The atmosphere in the restaurant is nice. They have plenty of tables. I don’t think you would need to wait to be seated.

Overall, I would recommend this place for ones who want to try pupusas.

First I came for pupusas, they were so good and everything else looked so good on the menu that I had to come back again before I left Des Moines & I’m so glad I did. Their pupusas are big & prices very reasonable. The staff were so friendly & the food came out quickly, I will make a point to come to this restaurant every time I’m in the Des Moines area.

What a gem of a place! The food is outstanding and what I remember from travels in Central America. We split a meal, and it was more than we could finish, so come with an appetite! Plus a great view of downtown Des Moines!

Excellent El Salvadoran restaurant in a defunct school building (AIB). Nice views of downtown and the lake with a big patio and a retro interior (happy days meets saved by the bell). The sampler platter was very tasty, the sweet pastry was a stand out and the papusas are addictive, especially with the house made pickled veggies, cabbage slaw and salsas. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is great, 10/10

A friend recommended it and we didn’t know what to expect other than some tasty papusas and anything else we struggled pronouncing correctly. It is located in one of the old AIB college buildings and buildings and it’s entrance and parking is on the south side. The bathrooms are down the hall in a shared corridor and were recently remodeled and we’re fairly clean.

It was just my wife and I and we went in with big eyes. It was about 5:30 on Wednesday. The space was furnished like a 50s diner but with Central American decor and music, which was cool. We were greeted with an ‘hola’ which I liked. Maybe 10 people eating in there but could seat 100. It looked like there was also patio seating which looked north and had nice views of Gray’s Lake and downtown.

Excellent service and the server took time explaining the menu options. We ordered the appetizer sampler, two different kinds of papusas, and shrimp and cream entree. Everything was tasty with the tubs of slaws (one spicy one not) and hot sauce. The hot sauce was seriously about as good as tasty tacos.

We got water to drink and our bill was maybe 40 bucks so not too bad considering everything we got. We will be back.

This place has just become one of my favorite places in Des Moines to eat. Everything is home made and so well prepared. The sauces are a wonderful burst of flavor. The food was plentiful for the price. The service was friendly and greeted everyone who walked in. The location is on the west side of the building. Hard to see until in the parking lot. There is also a great view of down town Des Moines.

I had such an amazing meal at La Cuscatleca South today. Now that I realize that the delicious pupusa here are necessary for my future happiness, I have become quite concerned about how hidden this restuarant is! They are located in what used to be the AIB college on Fluer and Bell. Not a scrap of visibility from the street but I highly recommend you find this place.

I got 1 bean, 1 shrimp and 1 jalapeño papusa. They are all filled with white stringy cheese. The mild cornmeal breading is perfectly crisped and in excellent proportion to the filling. At 3 bucks a pupusa I could get full with just one but why not get 3 and have leftovers. The mild slaw or spicy pickled red onions, peppers and carrots are perfect company to these pupusa. Can’t forgive myself for not going here sooner!
