They had a pho plus drink special so we decided to take advantage of that. Pho was a bit pricey at $17 but the free drinks made it worth it. We ordered a milk tea with boba and a Vietnamese iced coffee. Both were pretty good.
We ordered the create your own pho for $17. I picked the raw beef slices, brisket beef, and beef meatballs. The portions were large and the broth was good. We did enjoy what we ordered.
Service was good.. The older lady helping us at the beginning was very nice and friendly. Service was switched to a young man when our food was delivered. He seems new and shy.
He brought the six piece out and said that the that other plate was on its way then went to tend another table. Meanwhile, my daughter and I tried the chicken wings and they were borderline rancid and not fully cooked.
As he walked back to the counter from the other table, I stopped him and told him not to bother to bring the other plate because we did not like the food. He says sorry It’s already made, so you have to pay for it. I told him I’m sorry that it’s already made but we do not want it and I will not be paying for it. He then commenced two whining, saying that it’s not fair that if I don’t pay for it, the owner will make him pay for it and he can’t afford it because he is poor.
We went back and forth a few times to the point It was getting overwhelmingly annoying. He was constantly trying to obligate me to pay for it and telling me I can take the food to go I told him that we will not be eating it so we will not be paying for it. I told him that I would pay for the plate we already got and tasted but do not bring me the other plate because we do not want it. I tried to keep it very quiet and polite as to not alarm his other customers, but he would not relent. Finally, he brought me the receipt and decided to upcharge me $1.99 for the “salted pepper” flavoring of the wings that we had already discussed was not an upcharge and was the same regular price as the regular wings.
I told him that I would not be paying the additional 2 dollars because he already explicitly stated there was no difference in price. I gave him the cash for the first order and got up to walk out the door.
He starts chasing after me fussing at me. Telling me that I am no longer welcome here. And that he knew better when we walked in the door. This commotion, of course alerted his other customers to wonder what was going on. I told him that I have no desire or intention to ever return and that I will be giving him a clear review.
This place does not deserve to stay in business. Absolute, terrible food, terrible attitude and terrible service.
The fries that came with the wings and fries are good; especially with the thousand island type sauce. The fried wings are ok; though prefer if it has slightly less gamey flavor.
Also ordered the garlic spaghetti. The dish looks a little disappointing visually because it’s not the long strand one expected but short/3-4 inches. Flavor is great though if you are into strong garlic flavor.
The reason I’m mentioning the rating is that my family and I visited Wings and Phos after seeing those high scores while searching for nearby Pho spots.
This restaurant is hardly ready for business. Have you ever waited over 35 minutes for Pho at a Pho restaurant? Probably not. We ordered egg rolls and 3 bowls of Pho. The egg rolls took over 20 minutes to arrive. The server took the dish to another table first, then tried another table after they said they hadn’t ordered it. Only after being rejected twice did the server finally bring them to us.
10 minutes after we finished the egg rolls, the server came out with the Pho. We were relieved, but the server walked right past us to another table again. This time, we had to speak up and tell them the food was ours just to get it served.
I wouldn’t be writing this review if the food had been good, despite the rocky service. However, the Pho was possibly the worst I’ve had in San Diego. That’s not all. Every Pho restaurant usually has sauce dipping bowls on the table, but not this one. Since the lone server seemed busy, I went to the server station to ask for some, but they didn’t have any and gave me small plates instead.
When we asked for the bill after finishing our meal, the manager mentioned that there were complimentary drinks with the Pho—likely an opening promotion. It would have been nice to know earlier so we could have enjoyed them with our meal. Though we wanted to leave quickly due to our disappointment with the service and food, we ordered them since they were free.
We waited another 10 minutes. The server walked past us with two drinks and gave them to another table, calling them “complimentary.” The customers there even said thank you. Suspecting those were ours, I asked the server; after checking the station, the server actually took the drinks back from that table and brought them to us. We were still missing one drink, but the server seemed to have completely forgotten. I had to go to the server station myself to get the last cup before we could finally pay and get out of there.
There are plenty of Pho restaurants in San Diego. This place was the worst one I have ever visited.
