The other day, I decided to get takeout from Golden Phoenix in Schererville. I’m a big fan of Chinese American style cuisine. Decided to order the beef fried rice and crab rangoon. I gotta say, I was mildly disappointed in the food. The fried rice was smokey and had tender beef which I appreciated. However the crab rangoon was soggy and the filling was awfully sour. Honestly, probably the worst crab rangoon in the whole area! Inconsistent quality across the menu is the conclusion a logical patron must reach here. Quite disappointing to be honest.

This is the freshest Chinese Food I ever had. I placed a catering size entree’s order for my Senior Building Galentine’s Party in the city of Chicago. I payed the delivery charge and tipped the delivery person because he was extremely nice and it was a lot of food. The order was packaged with care. There was no spillage because the containers are not cheaply made. They have homemade hot mustard and Sweet & Sour Sauce. The food arrived hot in spite of the distance. Ok….First and foremost, this took place on New Year’s Eve.
So, they were BUSY…
Having said that, their service is still super slow. I placed my order and paid for it in advance (online thru their platform). I show up to pick up the order and I was told it was not ready and it would be about 15 to 20 minutes. Other people were coming in to pick up their orders that were called in BUT they had not yet been paid for. Interestingly enough, they were getting their orders ahead of me. In all, it took 1 hr and 56 minutes for my order to finally be ready (physically waiting 1 hour at the restaurant).
On top of that, I was charged a $6 “online platform fee” for ordering online.
To be fair, they did apologize for the lengthy delay AND they did give me two $10 Golden Phoenix gift cards for my trouble. However, I have no Idea if these gift cards are any good (they look previously used).
As to the food itself? It was good; absolutely no issues with the food and the order was correct.
Bottom line:
The food is good and at a decent price.
But,
Beware if they are busy. Their kitchen cannot handle the volume.

We have never had a bad meal here and have been ordering from them for years. Their homemade sauces are delicious and their food quality. The food is always ready and delivered before their estimation, which is wonderful for those last minute meals. Everything even reheats well. My teenager could live off the egg rolls and be extremely happy.

Hands down the best pork egg foo young I’ve had in a very long time. I’ve been searching for the best in the area since Golden Tree in Cal City closed their doors. Found it!!! And while the pork was solid, everything else was average. The crab rangoon is not sweet, the pork dumplings are mostly cabbage, and the fried rice is super bland. The restaurant is super small. It says dine in, but there was one chair against a counter. Come for the pork, take it to go, and dont dabble in too much else

Online on their website I ordered the sweet and sour chicken meal and orange chicken meal with fried rice and had it delivered. Both meals came with egg rolls and a pop. I ordered Dr peppers and bummed to have received 2 cream soda Dr Pepper which I didn’t drink. I do appreciate the very hot food and a great delivery person but both meals were incredibly BLAND. Everything no flavor.

New to the area and trying all the Chinese Restaurants in the area to replace my go-to one where I used to live. Haven’t found one yet that compares – there are not that many to choose from in Highland, Schereville, St. John or Cedar Lake. Ordered what I was familiar with back home – Sweet Sour Pork, Beef Kow, Pork Fried Rice (see photos). We had a 50/50 verdict – one person loved their Beef Kow and said the beef was tender & the vegetables were fresh & delicious & the gravy which seemed to have a little garlic in it was good. My Sweet Sour Pork didn’t compare to my old place because the breading on it was too thick that it made it too soft (not as crispy). However the sauce did have fresh pineapple, tomatoes & green pepper in it which definitely is a plus compared to other placed in this area. The fried rice could have used a little seasoning IMO. **GREAT FOOD GREAT QUALITY AND GREAT SERVICE! The food was nice, flavorful and hot! Meat is quality and not chewy like many Chinese places with their beef. I had the combo fried rice and combination egg foo young – delicious!
And the cashier was very kind enough to bring it outside to me since I had to take a phone call! Definitely recommend!

Would give zero stars if possible. The food is good/decent, but service is horrible. I’ve ordered from here many times and have had several issues, but foolishly kept going back. This recent experience is finally my breaking point.
I ordered via the app (which the website recommends and requests), was told food would be delivered in 1 hour. I called 1.5 hours later, but no one answered the phone. I kept calling, twice the phone was answered and I was hung up on. FINALLY someone spoke to me, checked the status of my order, and apparently they hadn’t even been checking for orders from their app?? I was told my order was “in a stack of paper” and hadn’t even been started. I was told they were very busy and had no idea when they would even start cooking my food. Don’t tell me to use the app if you don’t even use it! Don’t quote an hour if you know you’re very busy and it will take longer. Answer the phone and obviously don’t hang up on customers. And perhaps most importantly- if you’re too busy/backed up, TURN OFF ONLINE ORDERING!! THIS IS NOT HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS!!!
