To me, sushi is about texture, temperature, and flavor. All of these notes are recognized by the chefs and these qualities are absolutely perfect with their servings and attention to detail.
This time I had the Nozawa trust me and it did not disappoint!
If you have not yet been to Sugarfish you are missing out!
You can get better sushi elsewhere overall, but for what you pay here , I don’t think you can find better quality fish. Not to mention tip is included!!
Downsides are the waitlist style , which means peak times (weekend dinners) you maybe waiting a bit. Also sometimes the rice falls apart. I don’t think the downsides outweigh how tasty the fish is for how much you pay so we keep coming back here , and often. If you like nigiri and eat lots of sushi and don’t want to pay a ton for proper omakase every time , this place is unbeatable.
The staff is friendly and attentive too.
One note, they don’t seat you until your party arrives.
My date became sick shortly after our meal, and unfortunately, it wasn’t surprising given the overall experience. From the very beginning, something felt off. The edamame arrived cold, wet, poorly washed (with visible dirt coming off the shells), and smelling strongly of rotten fish (pretty disgusting tbh). The fish throughout the meal was slimy and tashed unfresh, the flavors were dull, and the rice was dry, crumbly, and oddly stale, falling apart every time we picked up a piece of nigiri. It’s literally supposed to be just fish and rice, and both fell short.
We paid $46 for a bottle of sake that wasn’t even properly chilled, and the service only made things worse. When a customer at a neighboring table broke a glass, several shards landed on my bag. Worried about transferring glass to my clothes or skin, I repeatedly asked for anything – a towel, a napkin, a cloth, a broom, even a wet wipe- so I could safely clean it. No one responded. Not a single staff member made the slightest effort to help.
For a place I once associated with quality, consistency, and care, this was an incredibly disappointing and frankly alarming experience. Truly shameful.
However, i would note that the service was really slow even for just getting a server’s attention. I kept my hand raised for 10 – 15 min with no response and the restaurant was not big (around 30 seats). Overall, go there if you want a lot of time to talk to your dinner companion(s), but not if you want a solid and normal speed meal.
Plus, the host was kinda rude while we wait for the pickup in the bench area.
It also gave the impression that the focus was more on avoiding tips rather than providing genuine hospitality.
I gave it a try once, but I wouldn’t return.
