If you’re anywhere near Petal and craving hibachi or sushi, Yamato Steakhouse is an absolute must. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere hits that perfect balance—clean, inviting, and energetic without being chaotic. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a family dinner as it does for a casual date night.
The hibachi experience is the real highlight. The chefs don’t just cook—they perform. The timing, the knife skills, the fire tricks—it’s dinner and a show. And the food backs it up. The steak is tender and cooked exactly to order, the shrimp are perfectly seasoned, and the fried rice has that classic savory depth you expect from a top-tier grill. Portions are generous without feeling excessive.
If you’re a sushi fan, the rolls are fresh and beautifully presented. The specialty rolls are creative but not overcomplicated, and the fish tastes clean and high quality. Even the simpler rolls are executed well, which says a lot about consistency.
Service is attentive and friendly. Drinks stay filled, plates are cleared promptly, and the staff makes you feel genuinely welcome—not rushed. That consistency is what keeps people coming back.
For Petal, Yamato isn’t just “good for the area.” It’s genuinely good, period. Solid food quality, entertaining hibachi chefs, dependable service, and a comfortable atmosphere. It’s one of those places you can recommend confidently and know it won’t disappoint.

I used to come here often but the food has been getting gradually worse. Today i got a fish plater and 6 rolls. The rolls were decent but the fish platter was horrible. The fish was rubbery and the fries were so hard and old that they literally hurt my gums. 14$ is ALOT of money for cold stale fish and fries ☹️. I live literally 3 minutes away there is no excuse for this. I wish they still took pride in their food like they used to.

Food used to be amazing, in the last several months food has been very bland and dry. No seasoning at all!!!

I rate it a ZERO! It was bland and they would not substitute a bowl of soup and salad for noodles. Ordered side of noodles which was bland and the salad was nothing but iceberg lettuce. They need to know the definition of a salad! Salad
A salad is a dish consisting of mixed ingredients, frequently vegetables. The Chinese restaurant by best buy and Super Kings is better than this by 100% and cheaper! Even though they call themselves Japanese, they have same food at Super King just more variety and taste better that includes their Sushi and Hibachi!

One of the better hibachi spots around Hattiesburg. Call and chicken stood up to me, it was very good. I got the teriyaki chicken lunch Bento, which came with spring roll, California roll, soup or salad, fried rice, hibachi chicken with vegetables, and Yum Yum sauce. Yum Yum sauce here was good because it wasn’t too sweet. I wish they gave more fried rice than California rolls. The soup was interesting, it wasn’t a miso soup taste that I would expect from a lunch Bento. I would come back.

service was horrible, didnt recieve plates with appetizers, had to eat off napkins. watched waitress play on her phone for 30mins and it literally took a hour and a half to get food never a refill and wait for someone to notice we needed our check.. their was no manager in sight and the kitchen cook stayed on his phone the whole time as well.. $60 was crazy i will drive to Hattiesburg next time and eat somewhere else before I give them any more money to them.

If you go to the Yamato Steakhouse, you might not want to order the lobster it is grilld and is 30 dollars and tasted like salty paper and it does not taste like the average lobster you would expect and we only orderd 3 plates when me and my partner went their wich was coconut shrimp a small steak and some soup and some how the total added up to be 76 dollars, alot of the food was basic and just over all so expensive would not recommend to others.
