This place is amazing !! me and my partner don’t mind a 3 hour drive just to eat here. It’s so delicious every food is served nicely and so far the dishes I’ve had are very rich in flavor. We loved the nachos and quesabirria tacos with their perfect sauce on the side. For desserts we enjoyed the fresh churros and delicious flan. For our drinks we love mocktails (honey berry & pink manhattan ) Our server was very sweet and she was able to make the nachos happen for us. Service and food 10/10 shout out to the cooks for putting their into the dishes.

We made a Valentine’s Day reservation at Nicolas de Herencia well in advance, only to be greeted with a limited fixed menu and customer service that felt… optional. Our first table was placed right in front of the bar — perfect if you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day with the sound of blenders and crowd noise. When we politely asked to move (since several tables were open), the staff acted inconvenienced and offered only one “approved” alternative.
As for the food — if you’re looking for authentic Mexican cuisine, keep looking. The lobster enchiladas resembled something between melted SpongeBob and Tostitos nacho cheese. The short rib enchiladas in mole blanco were aggressively salty, more fat than meat, and generously buried in cheese. We shared our concerns; we were met with silence.
Nearly $200 for dinner for two, and the highlight was how good the food looked compared to how disappointing it tasted. If overpriced and over-salted is your love language, this might be your spot.

This was hands down the best Mexican food I have ever had — and I live in Los Angeles. Nicolas blows places like Javier’s and La Cha Cha out of the water. The flavors were vibrant, balanced, and genuinely exciting. The prices were incredibly fair for the quality, and the entire staff was lovely.
Our server Gina was fantastic, and Chef Andres was so warm and welcoming — he visited every table and made the whole place feel like a family-run gem (which it is). The dishes you cannot miss:
the bone marrow elote
the birria queso dip
the short rib (unreal)
The cocktails were excellent, the menu variety was surprising in the best way, and every bite felt thoughtful and elevated. This restaurant would absolutely thrive in LA. We were blown away and already can’t wait to come back.

Romantic and trendy dinner spot! The food was good – the mole chicken was a highlight. Drinks were delicious – Mezcalita and Mexican Mule were stand outs. Recommend for something fun and different in Carmel – specifically great for couples.

We’re on a massive 30-day road trip from Vegas to LA to San Francisco—planned three months in advance from Pittsburgh, PA—and Nicolas Cocina de Herencia was *the* number one dining experience of the whole journey.
Poula, was hands-down the best server we’ve ever had. She explained everything beautifully and helped us choose cocktails with unique ingredients we’d never heard of. She even walked us through the hibiscus process behind one of the drinks—super cool.
The staff was warm, sweet, and attentive. When they saw me taking a photo of the kitchen, they invited me to peek inside and I got to watch them make tortillas from scratch. So impressive.
I had the halibut with mole (phenomenal), and my girlfriend had a fire-roasted poblano pepper stuffed with the best Dungeness crab in California.
The cocktails? Absolutely top-tier. I had several mezcal-based drinks that blew me away. Next time I’ll be trying the wine!
Huge thanks for an unforgettable evening. I wouldn’t be surprised to see you with a Michelin star in the near future.

Had the huitlacoche chile relleno and weeks later I can’t stop thinking about it! Didn’t even know what huitalacoche was but so thankful I tried it. Also the cilantro rice was even so good. Everything was delicious and well presented. I had a mezcal marg and even though I’m not usually a huge fan of mezcal it was well balanced and refreshing. The atmosphere inside is elegant but the patio was the popular choice the afternoon we dined. Can’t wait to get back to Carmel just to eat here.

Wow!!! Every single item, the appetizers, the drinks, the food: Amazing! They make their drinks strong, the food is beyond tasty. I live in the Bay Area, and this Mexican restaurant is now my favorite and the best I’ve ever found. It’s absolutely worth the price because it’s so good and the portions are generous but not ridiculous. Can’t wait to come back and I love the back story. Google it. What am amazing mom ( the chef), husband and kids! Brilliance and kudos to you Alvarez’s!!!

My wife and I decided to go here on Valentine’s Day. We had a reservation and everything. They sat us right behind the bar area where it was so loud to even talk. When we asked to be moved, the waitress was very rude in showing little to no care about our request. We were moved to a new table but the table had no light. The ceviche was alright but very small for a starter. Additionally, the food served for this day (I guess they change it based on what they have) was extremely salty. My wife and I hade the short rib enchiladas and the lobster enchiladas. The rice and beans that came with it were way too salty and the enchiladas had half of it filled with cheese and poor mole on top. They claim this place to be authentic Mexican food but it honestly turned out to be an insult to any Mexican dish ever made. The lobster enchiladas tasted like melted Tostitos Queso dip and the short rib had more fat on the meat than a stick of butter. We paid $200 which is nowhere near reasonable for the quality of the food we were given. Overall, if you want the looks of high quality food but not the flavor, then you’ve come to the right place…

Not sure how to write this up. I had higher hopes but left ultimately disappointed. The guacamole was fairly standard if not slightly bland. House made chips were good though. Wife had enchiladas which were nothing very special or worth the price tag over a run of the mill Mexican restaurant. Which brings me to the roasted pork shank, Cochinita Pibil. This is usually my go to dish and upon presentation the pork in its chili and spice sauce looked amazing. You could tell the pork was about to fall apart looking at it. But then the salt. Not just slightly salty, but salted to the point of being inedible. The rice, beans and house made corn tortillas were all fantastic but also not enough to make up for a $50 inedible pork shank. Carmel is filled with better options. I can’t speak to the rest of the menu. The atmosphere is fantastic and the service top notch. But not likely a repeat experience for us.
