I have come here several times to order lunch with various friends and family! I keep bringing people to come try because it’s so wonderful. Very casual but service is fantastic. They have GF bread that DOESNT suck!

All ingredients taste fresh as well, and prices are decent! My only wish is that they were open on Sundays.

Overall a really good experience. The sandwich and soup was good, but I have had better. For Huntsville, the quality is good. The atmosphere is great and menu options are good. Staff was great! Seating area is pretty small, but I did not have a problem finding a seat today. I would not hesitate to come back and prices were fair.

Good spot for a quick, casual lunch downtown. Good selection of sandwiches. Sandwich and soup or side combo being added to the menu is going to be a good value. Hopefully they expand their menu and add more specialty drink/coffee options.

A group of us came to try out The Local today and the food was fabulous! I got the Gobblecado and it was so yummy – I will get it again! An additional perk was the weather was perfect for eating outside while leaves for falling – lovely!

The Local is a new sandwich spot in downtown Huntsville. Run by the Mercado Group (whose other ventures include The Standard and Del Chuco), it took the place of Le Petit Bijou on the square.

I came to try it with coworkers for lunch a few days after they opened. We arrived promptly at 11 and were among the first customers there for the day.

I will admit I am kind of sad to see the changes they made to the old Bijou. It had such a charming and comfortable “nook” feel, and The Local just feels a little less…local, I guess. Personal or intimate would be a better descriptor but I can’t resist the little joke, teehee. At any rate, it’s nice enough inside, I like the big black menu boards and everything was clean. They were playing sort of party/pop music from the late 90s/early 00s, which we enjoyed.

The menu is mostly sandwiches and soups, plus a seasonal soup of the day. Sides are chips, pasta salad, or a cup of soup. They have a drink cooler with bottled soft drinks and teas. The menu runs pretty pricey imo but some sandwiches you have the option of getting a half portion, which helps the cost factor without really skimping on a full meal given the size of the sandwiches — or at least, the sandwich I got.

I ordered a half “Lou” (which is very much a sort of Italian deli sandwich, lots of meats) and a cup of the soup of the day (loaded potato) as my side, while my coworkers got the roast beef, meatball sandwich, and two half muffulettas.

Personally, I think I chose the best item. My sandwich was very good, with well-balanced ingredients: super savory, thinly sliced meats, crisp and fresh veg, creamy and bouncy mozz, and a slightly over-generous but still enjoyable drizzle of Italian vinaigrette. I really liked it, and it was PLENTY for a “half” sandwich. The soup wasn’t quite as successful, with somewhat sparse “loaded” toppings (only a few bits of bacon) and a little too much oil, but it had a pleasant texture and I liked it enough to eat it all.

The folks who got the meatball sandwich and the roast beef (the SRB, not RB’s hot sister, as they’re listed on the menu) also liked theirs. For my money, these whole sandwiches, especially the meatball, didn’t seem *that* much bigger than my half sandwich. So if it’s bang for your buck you’re after, I think the Lou was the best choice.

The two people who got the half size muffalettas said they liked the filling, but both asked for the bread to be toasted and whoever toasted it was a little over enthusiastic. The bread got very hard and crunchy and was tough to bite into. They were a little disappointed in that, but said they’d order it again and just skip toasting.

Overall, I’d say this place is a little pricey but the use of obviously quality ingredients makes up for it if you are someone passionate about yummy food or if you’d just like to treat yourself with a fancy, high-quality sandwich. I really did thoroughly enjoy the Lou and will likely come back for another. One of the folks working there also told us they’re working on their menu and creating more options for more half sandwich choices at lower prices. I also saw they’re now offering breakfast, to include bagel sandwiches and burritos. I’d like to try one of those sometime, too.

Welcome to Huntsville, The Local!

Delicious sandwich shop on the square. Staff is very friendly and sandwiches are amazing! The soup and potato salad were perfect pairings for each of our sandwiches. If you are downtown and want a sandwich this is the place to go. Small interior so better for smaller groups.

A much needed fast casual sandwich shop right on the square – I had the “SRB” – roast beef, onion jam, cheddar, arugula and mustard cream. SO good. Will be back!

The food was delicious! I got the Gobblecado, and I loved how fresh it tasted. The avocado topping was really flavorful. So glad to have this place on the square now.
