We definitely Will Be Back Thank You.
We also had an item that’s not formally on the menu – the Mac and cheese chili. It’s just want it sounds like and it was super yummy for a filling side.
Atmosphere is positive, the waitresses kind and helpful to find the best burgers, and there is plenty of indoor / outdoor seating.
Thank you for dinner!
Also got soda pop in glass bottles (root beer, grape, and vanilla) without artificial sweeteners, which was nice. Got some socks and a gift bag for our family members. Steve (Steven?) was super polite and friendly, took our order, and told us some interesting history about the shop. Olivia served my ice cream quickly. The blueberry cheesecake tasted great.
The restrooms were clean and single-occupancy. The property itself looks small but is much bigger inside. Little knicknacks and touristy things for sale as well. Outdoor seating is available as long as you don’t mind fuzzy caterpillars visiting your table.
Overall, a hidden gem in Interlachen . A cozy place with excellent customer service. Greatly recommend for quick food stop. Prices are higher than we expected; quality is reflected in the pricing, so we didn’t mind.
Upon entering I was surprised and impressed by the selection of soda options, and the welcoming staff. Good vibes overall, and the menu was small but equally impressive at the options. My partner got the Mushroom Swiss burger with no mayo, and I got the Mac and Cheese burger with no mayo. He opted for Mac and cheese as his side, while I got the French fries.
We waited to get the food which we got to go, but not a terribly long time considering I was in line at McDonald’s this week for 28 minutes. We sat in the dining area and sipped our sodas. We were both pleased and looking forward to trying the food.
That’s where I fear this story takes a hard right and into a downward spiral… which is the purpose of this message.
At first, we were both really excited and pleased with our selections and the food. Though honestly, the noodles were overcooked… good flavor, but a bit mushy when hot. I was happier with the texture when it cooled a bit, but I was going to opt for a different experience the next time we went (we honestly were already planning to go back). The BBQ sauce doesn’t seem uniquely their recipe but it was good. I will hands down say they have the BEST French fries in town… they were crispy perfection strips that were a highlight of the meal for me. My partner really enjoyed the mushroom Swiss, and recommended I get it next time. He tried a fry, and agreed they were good; unfortunately he noticed the same issue with the Mac and cheese noodles being overcooked.
Cut to me about an hour, maybe two hours later vomiting into a trash bag while I am sitting upon porcelain. I figured, well… if it’s just my food I’ll order something completely different next time because it was honestly a horrible experience. Everything came up or out one way or the other, but afterwards I was fine. No other symptoms… just in need of mouthwash.
Cut to this morning… guess who else just had the same horrible experience? My partner. So… it’s definitely not just a me thing
I am curious as to what their practices are that could cause two people who got different meals and the same physical reaction? My partner said the burgers themselves. Perhaps it’s the macaroni and cheese that we both had an individual portion of? I doubt it was the fries, since he only had one… but maybe, I don’t know to be honest.
I like to support local business, but not at the cost of my health. I wanted to be respectful and reach out as a neighbor about this before I posted any reviews. So I did. In fact, the first part of this review is an edited version of the message I sent to them.
Firstly, they answered quickly, politely, and repeatedly explained they take food safety and quality control very seriously, and did reach back out to me (about four hours later) after speaking with the staff that worked yesterday… and they claim no wrongdoing happened on their part, and offered sympathy for our ailments. However, the experience overall will have us going back to Burger Barn in Hawthorne next time we want a good local burger.
