It was fabulous. The atmosphere is an upscale under water theme and fun. The service was absolutely fantastic. Sarah was very attentive and helpful when picking my dinner. I asked which of the 2 selections I should choose and went with her recommendation. It was soooo good. The steak was cooked to perfection which is difficult on 1 oz medallions. You could tell everything was cooked to order. Dad had the special which was salmon and it was very good. The clam chowder had a lot of clams.

The one thing is you have to allow around 2 hours for dinner. It’s not fast food, but cooked to order. If you are expecting fast go to Texas Roadhouse, but you’ll be sorry you missed a great steak in a relaxing setting. Didn’t feel rushed to give up my table at all, which is very nice. I also loved how they turned up the lights at the end (since we were last in there) for dad to take pictures.

All I can say is, wow. This is one of the most unique hidden gems in Kansas City. The food was absolutely stunning. Everything from bacon wrapped scallops, crab cakes, and shrimp cocktails. For an entree, we had cedar planked salmon, swordfish, and chicken alfredo. Such an intimate atmosphere and our host Chris gave us a tour of the restaurant. Look forward to eating in the captains lounge. Please do not overlook this dining experience. Also looking forward to a fathers Day event there live show what!!!!!!

We went to The Reef soon after it opened a few years ago, well before the pandemic. The food was good, decor was great but the service was not good at all. The owner felt so bad, he comped one of our dinners. So we had not been back until this week.

What a difference!

Our server Michael was excellent. He was attentive, made us feel welcome and contributed greatly to our wonderful dining experience.

We already loved the nautical ambience. Upon a closer look, it was amazing how much of a collector the owner must be to have everything…I mean everything go with the nautical theme.

We started with crab cakes which were delicious. Not a bunch of fillers as you often encounter, all yummy crab meat.

For mains we ordered trout and salmon. Both were delicious as well as the accompanying garlic potatoes and asparagus.

For dessert, cheese cake with strawberry topping that was a wonderful exclamation point for a fine dining experience.

We will be going back…probably on a regular basis!

We had seen this place online. We went for a birthday dinner. 1st, not a big deal but then don’t offer anything for birthday’s. The reason I gave 2 stars and not 1 is because the decor is pretty cool here, the waiter was also nice. The place was very dark and the booths right next to us looks like they were bing used as break rooms for the employees. Very cluttered. The worst thing… the food. The food wasn’t good at all. The reed has no calamari and for being called the reef, it’s seafood selection is seriously lacking. I had trout and it was dry and tasted like it had just been doused with large amount of salt.my wife got the chicken and it didn’t look very appealing. It wasn’t horrible but honestly tasted boiled. The best thing there was the chicken strips my children ordered. This place was a major let down for the price. You also have to pay extra for salad if you want it. Definitely not worth the price. The decor was cool but the food was lacking in a major way.

Had dinner at The Reef. The first thing you notice is the immersive decor. We were quickly seated and ordered our food and drinks. It took a long time for my wife to get her drink from the bar. Our salads came out about a minute before our entrees. I must say my house salad was one of the best I’ve ever had. We both got the shrimp and scallops. It was amazing. The seafood was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the sauce on the fettuccine couldn’t have been better. I just wish I had gotten a little more seafood. 2 shrimp and 2 scallops seemed a little light. My wife ordered a second drink. It didn’t arrive at the table until we were ready for the check. Overall it was a delicious meal in an interesting setting, but there was some room for improvement. It also didn’t help that we were seated next to a badly over-served guest who was being loud and crude.

EDIT: July 2019

We’ve been back to Reef several times since we discovered it several months ago. The food has been more that amazing every single time. Our favorite is the couple dinner of lobster and filet steak with two side choices. Perfectly prepared all 3 times. The sliders appetizer is good, but not as good as the crab cakes.

The only problem we have found in each of our visits is the staff acts as though they don’t care if we are there or not. The bartender seems to be very overwhelmed even when there are only a handful of people in the whole restaurant. He gives off a vibe like we are a nuisance and that he is not happy at all to have us there. We are hoping that this will wear off and he will enjoy his work and the people who come in. The interior design is truly a work of art.

We would love to have this place around to be in our rotation for years to come. I just wish we could enjoy the experience more right now while it’s still our little secret. All ready people are finding this little pearl and it does have the potential to really take off.
There are just a few things we think could really help it. We will be back for the delicious food and hope to see some improvements in other areas as time goes. A Signature Drink menu would be a great idea to add for people like us who love to try a different creative cocktail before our meal. Welcoming customers in by all staff that you pass by would be a nice gesture. A little friendliness and asking if a customer has been there before and if not giving a little history of the place can make a customer feel welcomed as well. Keep the soda machine fresh. Our soda was flat 2 times. A great establishment isn’t only in the food, it’s really a complete experience that puts it above average dining. I’m going to give Reef 4 out of 4 fish and hope to see the experience improve as time goes by and they work out some kinks. I would LOVE to take my camera and photograph and help with some marketing! Definitely try this place! #reefkansascity #kcfoodies #dineoutkc #seafood #unique #uniqueinteriors

We accidentally discovered Reef and on one of our weekly date nights. Walking in from the outside of a modern building was like walking into the underground lair of Neptune. It is beautifully decorated, clean and spacious. We got a little bit of history from one of the staff and ordered an amazing dinner. The food is truly remarkable. We were disappointed that there were no signature cocktails, as what better opportunity to spin some creativity into a themed cocktail? Maybe they will consider this in the future….? I have a few ideas about some things, but I truly think Reef has the potential to be an insanely big deal. 5 out of 5 fish!

Kansas City natives here. We were looking for something different tonight and found a lovely gem. Came here for our anniversary. Started with a house salad, onion rings and bacon scallops. We had the swordfish and salmon as our main dishes with candied carrots, asparagus and mashed potatoes. The carrots were amazing. The onion rings were fresh and the right amount of light breading. As a personal touch, the chef surprised us with the best crème brûlée we’ve ever had in our lives. Our server, Sara, was super friendly. The atmosphere was fun and I actually loved how it wasn’t super jam packed with people. Our compliments to the chef! We will return.

Jan 2022 update: Service is fantastic. Drinks were as expected. Ambiance is still cool.

Things have changed with the food…… Bluepoint oysters are just not as fresh as Eddie V’s or Farina’s for some reason. Shrimp were huge, but a lil fishy smell. Prime rib at Summit grill is more tender/flavorful. Might be the grade of prime rib used. They no longer have the giant fried shrimp. 5 star service/ambiance. 3.5-4 stars for food. IMHO. Will try again in future.

Jan 2020 update: Back for the 4th trip on V day. It is very busy. Wait staff is so aware of the needs. Food is still fantastic. The new large lobster tail is PERFECTION. The prime rib is still great. Tried the crab dip. Good stuff.

Back for 3rd time in 2 weeks. The service is still a A+++, the ambiance is truly a work of passion by the owner, and food is actually even better than before the 3rd time around if that’s possible. The large fried shrimp are still hands down the best in KC. Tried the prime rib tonight, amazing! Swordfish is still the best in KC. Blue cheese salad dressing is spot on.

Back for a 2nd trip. Ambiance is even better the 2nd try. Swordfish was still great. Wife skipped filet and did shrimp…. yummy! Sold out of crab cakes and prime rib. Service was still outstanding.

Listen up KC, the best seafood is not the Bristol, it’s the Reef. The extra large fried shrimp are as good as it gets. The ambiance is like your in Maine. Very nautical and the sea lovers will love it. The service is the best non-Michelin restaurant I’ve been to. The bar area is unreal, perfect for happy hour. The outdoor area is PERFECT.

The Reef is an amazing place to visit. The ambiance is a sight to see. My food was absolutely amazing. I got the salmon special. My only one complaint is not having more sea food on the dinner menu.

This is a hidden gem in the Northland and a seafood restaurant. They serve fresh seafood. There are other tasty choices for those who do not favor seafood. This is a classy restaurant with fantastic decor. However a classy restaurant like this should not charge to have bread along with your salads. Both my wife & I felt like our food was too salty.
