This is retro, comfort Chinese food – like it used to be 40 years ago. We were seated promptly and served our broccoli tempura appetizer immediately. It came piping hot with fresh broccoli. We also had a beef lo mein and tofu dish. Both had fresh ingredients and were cooked nicely. Kids had virgin piña coladas which they enjoyed. Oh, and the music mix was fun – The Police, REM, Meatloaf. Will be back.

We got sweet and sour chicken take out. Food was excellent. Especially loved the fried rice. Very dark and flavorful. Also the place seems fun… lots of loud people in the bar area having fun.

I had not been to the China Ruby for probably more than 15 years.

I was very happy to see that it was still there and was as I remembered. It’s a bustling friendly inviting place.

The menu is extensive and has a lot of dishes that I would be likely to order.

The food came quickly and was very flavorful and well prepared.

The drinks were very good as well. The host and hostess were very friendly.

I read a bunch of the negative reviews, as well as positive ones, and then I went here with my family and tried about six dishes. My take:

1. It’s not the best Chinese food in the world. It’s also nowhere close to the worst. I understand some reviewers have had bad food here, and I don’t discount those reviews–maybe the cook has a bad day now and then. All I know is that nothing we got was bad, it was all good, but yeah, perhaps it isn’t what you would get at a place that charges three times the price. It was good enough and priced low enough that I would go back again. The only odd thing was that we got a plate of steamed vegetables and they had zero seasoning or sauce on them. They were good steamed vegetables, don’t get me wrong, but they weren’t even salted, so I’m inclined to think someone forgot part of the prep checklist in making them.

2. The bathrooms are not bad. Granted, I lived in China for two years so I’ve seen what a real Chinese restaurant bathroom looks like, and compared to every single one of those this was the most beautiful, pleasantly fragrant experience I’ve ever had in a Chinese restaurant bathroom. If these bathrooms were in a restaurant in China, people would be flocking to that restaurant just to experience the bathrooms.

3. The service was great. Everything came out fast and hot. The two servers we interacted with were friendly and attentive.

The only real disappointment was the fortune cookies. I’m not into these cookies that give you life advice, I want a fortune! I want them to go out on a limb, take a risk, and make a prophecy about my future, like “You will find immense riches on the way home,” or “Today you will die.”

Please do not come here.

The hostess and bar staff were very friendly, that was the only positive.

Our waitress was extremely terse and rude, we basically felt unwelcome as soon as we were seated.

Our food came out promptly, but I wish it hadn’t. The sweet and sour chicken ordered had the absolute sweetest sauce I’ve ever had. There was no sour in the taste.

The soups was hot, but very bland (egg drop and wonton).

My wife got vegetable chow mein, and it was a disgusting, weird, tasteless, gelatinous mess. It was literally a bowl of soggy sprouts in a grey, sugary broth.

I really REALLY want to support local business, but I would not recommend this place to anyone.

we live only a few minutes from the china ruby and have gone to it off and on for almost 30 years.for years the food was real good and consistent.then it was sold and things went down hill.we recently went back and have found that the food is as good or better than when we first started going.it was quite hot and not greasy in the least.our server was attentive and our food came out quickly.we were also surprised to find the prices still very reasonable.we’ll be going back often.
i have looked at most of the reviews, and almost all the very negative ones are anonymous.why would you trust the opinion of somebody that won’t tell you who they are?

We went there last night and had an excellent experience. The
food was delicious and fresh, probably the best steak terriyaki that we’ve ever had! My son had fruit punch that we learned was made to order. His quote, “It’s blowing my mind!” Friendly, attentive staff. Looking forward to diving into leftovers today as the portions were huge! Highly recommend!

A local clique Asian restaurant. The bar is the busy side comprised of mostly middle-age men at the bar. The dining area is quiet. You can play Keeno and All or Nothing from your table. Lottery machine in the lobby. Very friendly greeting staff. The food has never been quite on-target for me. Not the average taste of Asian restaurant fare but a bit below average. All in all, if you’re from out of town I suggest you avoid this one. $ out of $$$

I’m not known to be picky, but this food was awful. I had had enough when the noodles were mixed in a substance with the consistency of snot from the chef’s nasal cavity. And the flavor was horrible. You think I am being dramatic, but I am surely not. The other reviews back me up.

Good local restaurant, that has recently gone a little downhill. Have heard this from several other patrons as well. This restaurant has always been a very steady consistent place to go, but something recently has changed that status, and no one knows why, because it’s usually a busy place. Hopefully then can realize this, and return the quality to the level it was at before.
