We accidentally ordered samosa and chole bhature as takeaway, but we were meant to eat there. The lady kindly came over and asked if we needed plates and cutlery. The food was fresh. We were travelling in Hastings and really appreciated the help.
Will definitely recommend
Today, I ordered Aloo Paratha for a change, as I usually prefer South Indian dishes. However, I was disappointed to find that the potato stuffing was placed inside naan dough and served as Aloo Paratha. I tried to politely explain this at the counter, mentioning that Aloo Paratha is traditionally made with whole wheat flour, but I was told that “nobody makes Aloo Paratha with whole wheat flour.” That response was disappointing, and it made me feel that I perhaps should not have mentioned it.
For your awareness, the traditional ingredients for Aloo Paratha are as follows:
For the dough
• Whole wheat flour – 2 cups
• Salt – a pinch
• Water – as needed
• Oil – 1 tsp
For the potato filling
• Boiled potatoes – 3 medium (mashed, no lumps)
• Onion – 1 small, finely chopped (optional)
• Green chilli – 1, finely chopped (optional)
• Ginger – 1 tsp, grated
• Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp, chopped
• Salt – to taste
• Red chilli powder – ½ tsp
• Garam masala – ½ tsp
• Cumin powder – ½ tsp
• Amchur (dry mango powder) – ½ tsp (optional)
If naan dough is used for the potato stuffing, it is more accurately described as stuffed naan, not Aloo Paratha. The taste and texture are also heavier and richer compared to a traditional Aloo Paratha made with whole wheat flour.
I hope this feedback is taken in the right spirit, as I truly enjoy dining at Spice Traders and wish to see the authenticity maintained.
Thank you
