Who ever says this food is good has ZERO taste buds in their mouths….. not only did we have to wait over an hour after we ordered and only 3 other tables occupied….. but over priced for 4 shrimp and one cluster of crab legs with no seasoning… this wasn’t even basic….. don’t waste your money… Wal-mart’s frozen section has better seafood…. Maryland style???? Must be a Maryland street in Rocky Mount…..

I recently visited Bustin’ A Gut, a new seafood spot, and here are my thoughts from a first-timer’s perspective.
First Impressions
The warm welcome from the associates gives the vibe of a fresh, growing restaurant. It’s nice to see new energy and enthusiasm as you walk in.
Ordering Experience
The workflow is a bit unconventional: both dine-in and to-go customers share the same line. There isn’t traditional table service, so you order in line after picking up a menu, then find a table yourself and return to place your order.
It requires a bit of coordination, especially if you’re dining with a partner. One person can secure a table while the other places the order.
Payment is collected upfront, which streamlines the process once you’ve decided on your items.
There’s a handy board featuring daily specials and menu options, making it easy to spot what’s available and plan your meal.
Menu Highlights
Notable options include crab, steamed broccoli, mac and cheese, and candied yams. The variety is appealing, and it’s clear they’re aiming to offer comforting, crowd-pleasing sides along with seafood stars.
Service and Atmosphere
As a new establishment, the concept of self-seating and ordering in line may feel a bit confusing at first, but it becomes more intuitive with a little practice.
Adding a few more tables and introducing a traditional waitstaff could help smooth the experience, especially during peak times, and make the restaurant feel more polished. It could also enhance the overall flow for larger groups.
Food Quality
The seafood was generally well-prepared and flavorful. The fries were a standout, and the steamed broccoli complemented the meal nicely.
A minor note: the crab legs arrived warm but not hot, and there wasn’t butter on the side for dipping—only a spread on the crab legs themselves. A separate butter dip would elevate the crab experience for sure.
Takeaways
Bustin’ A Gut has potential, especially with its bold flavors and welcoming staff. A few operational tweaks—like clearer signage for the ordering flow, more table availability, and traditional waitstaff—could significantly improve the dining experience.
If you’re patient with the current system, you’ll likely enjoy the solid seafood options and comforting sides.

If you’re looking for great seafood in the Rocky Mount area, I highly recommend this place. They’re a bit pricey-however the plates we had were well worth it. But, the presentation comes in a fast food style basket with about a 30 minute wait before it’s brought to your table by robot. Which is neat in itself. My husband ordered their signature dish: the seafood egg roll and said it was great, our son got the broiled shrimp platter and ate every bite, and I got the fried seafood platter and loved it. If you’re passing through Rocky Mount don’t miss this place!

The ordering process could be better than paying then finding a seat or finding a seat then paying. We waited for our food for an hour with no one checking in or explaining the wait. People were served before us that hadn’t waited more than 30 minutes. A table was checked on that hadn’t been there longer than us and received there food before us with their order being wrong. When I received my food I was told they had no tomato and they didn’t include the fries I ordered with my meal. Horrible service. The only good thing was the young lady that greeted everyone. The picture speaks for itself, and that is how it arrived at the table.

Would say I could have sampled the food; however, no. My wife and I visited on Somewhat quiet Friday evening bout 744 pm – not crowded. Told to have seat – waited bout 20 minutes – no service. A party of 4 came in, sat down, greeted by server. Server returned to them bout 3 minutes with water and proceeded to take their order. We were seated next to them. I told my wife “let’s go.” If I could give zero. Here’s to hoping for a good outing with my wife. We went to directly to Texas Steakhouse – attended to immediately. First impressions are lasting “Busting a Gut” – you failed.

The seafood egg roll stood out for its balance of flavor, texture, and execution. The filling was well-seasoned, generous, and properly cooked, with distinct seafood flavor rather than being masked by excess batter or oil.
The wrapper was crisp without being greasy, indicating correct oil temperature and fry time. Overall, this item demonstrated strong attention to technique and quality and was easily one of the best executions of a seafood egg roll I’ve had in the Rocky Mount, NC area.

First time dining here (1/8/26) The design/setup is really nice and the atmosphere is cozy. The robot serving food to the table is unique BUT waayy to loud for a small/medium size dining area and a lil to talkative. My fried trout was good the hushpuppies was to hard, broccoli & cheese was NOT broccoli & cheese with like ten pieces of shredded cheese in it and the cabbage had NO taste even with salt and pepper it still didnt taste right . My sister’s lemon pepper wings didnt have enough lemon pepper flavoring for her taste. Perhaps she could have asked for some xtra seasoning on the side . The strawberry shortcake was also good Our waitress didnt come off as a people person perhaps it was just one of them days . Despite this review I hope this restaurant/business is successful Downtown and the Community needs it.
Peace & blessings to all☺️
