This restaurant has been around a long time, but has recently changed hands. I’ve tried most of the Mexican restaurants in the area over the years, many in Avon Park, but none of them have been noteworthy, till now. Ranchero Cafe is by far the best Mexican restaurant around.

We tried the Tostadas de Ceviche which were excellent. Crisp, fried tostadas topped with a fish ceviche that had bright, fresh tart flavors.

Also the Caldo de Camarónes, made to order, had a good mix of fresh vegetables (which were crisp-not overcooked), in a mildly spiced tomato/vegetable broth and 9 jumbo shrimp in their shells cooked to perfection. The soup was served with a side dish of fresh lime wedges, chopped onions and cilantro, and a basket of soft warm tortillas. I could eat this one everyday.

There was also a large Philly Cheesesteak served with nicely cooked fries (crisp-not soggy). My wife’s 84 year old mom ate the entire sandwich, she loved it so much. I ate most of the fries (and I’m usually not a fan of fries).

They also have a good selection of Mexican beers and sodas.

I read they serve breakfast all day, so I’m coming back for that.

The dining area seats up to around 25-30 people. They have a few comfy booths.

The service was excellent. Ricardo, the owner’s nephew, who obviously knows customer service, worked the front. He seems genuinely personable.

Honestly, if you love Mexican food this place is worth seeking out.

Edit: We went back to try the Shrimp Fajitas. Ricardo provided us with both corn AND flour tortillas. The fajitas came out sizzling and were delicious.

Really nice place where they make the authentic food fresh every day, you don’t get that everywhere. Nice lunch with my husband. Red and green sauces were very good, tortilla chips were perfect hot and fresh. Great service. We’ll be back to try the sopas 🙂

I ordered some barbacoa tacos to go and decided to dine in. I’d have to say they were some of the best tacos I’ve had locally. The staff was friendly and attentive, even bringing me extra napkins without asking. I’d recommend anyone to stop by and try them out.

Called to make a pickup order…we ordered 8 chicken tacos and 1 steak. When I arrived the total was $27. Taco Tuesday is $2 tacos, so I was confused. The rude girl that was working said taco Tuesday is only for the small tacos and you ordered the big ones. Before I can say that I didn’t, the boy in the back came out and said “the girl on the phone asked for the big ones” .. I was right next to her and she didn’t. I left it and took the tacos as is. Got home, we had 10 TACOS INSTEAD. They charged us extra on every taco AND added/charged and extra one we didn’t order. The food was completely disgusting. Meat tasted frozen from a bag, the texture and taste gave it away. The salsa verde was flavorless and no spice at all, tasted from a can. Onion and cilantro had NO flavor whatsoever , it’s like it had nothing on it! We didn’t like it, neither did my kids (who eat everything). I’ll be sticking to Azul Tequila from now on, where you get bigger better tacos that are ACTUALLY $2 AS ADVERTISED. I wonder how many people ranchero does this to, and gets away with it to avoid another wait for tacos in the Florida heat. 0 stars

This place! Where to start? It’s that hole in the wall, family owned gem that anyone wishes to come across with. After living in Mexico for a while, I can testify that this place is truly authentic. I was visiting Sebring for a lacrosse tournament, and the hotel staff recommended the place for breakfast because it was already closed for dinner on that day. I struggled about going for breakfast because I never eat breakfast. However, I decided to give it a try and to my surprise, I could order anything on the menu even at 1030am, so since I love, love ceviche, I decided to order a tostada de ceviche. Wow! I don’t recall having tostadas de ceviche like this outside of Mexico. It was the best, so fresh and the best part? The price! I also had a cafe con leche, which was pretty good. My son loaded up on protein with an omelet and potatoes/ hash browns, which were delicious too, and he also ate some of my ceviche and the chorizo and scrambled egg taco After trying these, I asked if they had lengua (cow tongue) and when they said yes, it was done! I knew we had to go back after our games. We stopped by after the games, and my son “wasn’t hungry,” so I ordered another tostada ceviche and a cow tongue taco. Well, we ended with 2 tostadas de ceviches, 2 tongue tacos, and a whole plate of tongue meat chimichanga, rice, and refried beans. I believe it was less than $30, which is a steal compared to where we live. I can’t miss to mention that the owner and the server were very, very nice and attentive. Thank goodness this place is 2 hrs away from home. Otherwise, I would look like a cow LOL… Wear something light because it was a little warm inside, although it was like 106 degrees outside
