So lucky to get a table for their soft opening this weekend. We tried the full preview menu and everything was delicious. Standouts were the chili chicken, mee krab, and ginger crab. The space is clean and intimate with a feel that transports you to a bustling city. The service is friendly, fast, and already knowledgeable about the menu. Grab a seat at the 4-seat counter if you want to watch all the kitchen action while you dine. We have had several great experiences at their other locations, but this is a great addition for anyone over on the west side.

In a city drowning in “elevated” this and “inspired” that, Holy Basil Santa Monica stands out by being deeply personal, wildly flavorful, and completely itself. The room has a warm glow, and the whole experience feels like being invited to the chef’s house on a night they’re only cooking for people they genuinely like.

Nothing here tiptoes. The Tom Yum risotto shows up with crab, heat, and zero apologies. The Nam Tok beef broth is a full architectural feat—layered, balanced, and bold. Even the small plates overperform like they’re auditioning for Chef’s Table.

There are no substitutions because, honestly, the dishes are already dialed in. You’re here to trust them, not negotiate.

The vibe lands somewhere between casual neighborhood hang and dinner at your impossibly cool friend’s place—the one who drops “Bangkok” into conversation the way other people mention Trader Joe’s.

In short: Holy Basil Santa Monica serves Thai with swagger, heat, and confidence—the kind usually reserved for surfers who can actually surf.

The best part of the dining experience at Holy Basil is the service and atmosphere! Exceptional! However the food is lackluster. Thai basil and Thai chili are the main ingredient throughout most dishes on the menu; and the problem is that these 2 ingredients are so over-powering it mutes all other flavors. Each dish ordered taste the same with different levels of intensity of basil and chili and lacked overall flavors. The menu while eclectic, just didn’t measure up. I really wanted to like this place, but the food just wasn’t giving me “Thai food” vibes. Particularly since I was in Bangkok just 2 weeks ago, so authentic Thai food is still fresh in my mind. The restaurant appears popular and I may give another try in the future. I do recommend.

Unassuming spot but excellent food.

Highlights: Pad kee mao with wagyu (incredible); Nam tok tataki (excellent); green curry risotto (fire).

Wouldn’t get again: Chili chicken (no indication on the menu that this is fried chicken; too high breading to chick ratio); pork belly (we added this to the Pad kee mao and it wasn’t very good)

Food was served very quickly; impressive for such a small kitchen.

Food is decently spicy overall and I don’t think you can modify it.

They were out of the crab fried rice 🙁

Food gave me some digestive issues the next morning.

One complaint is the place feels a little “low quality”, from the cheap paper menus to the chairs to the dishware/glassware.

Outstanding food. Great ambiance, great use of spice.

Loved the Thai Caesar salad, the sautéed eggplant, and the crab fried rice. Really unique takes on all of them. Bursting with flavor and spice!

Food was delicious & made with care (good wok hei on pad kee mao)! Service would have been a “5” if server had been more knowledgeable about dish ingredients ( eg. contains shellfish or dairy) and did not leave us alone for quite a while, waiting for dessert option. Atmosphere: music was too loud leading other patrons to raise their voices to converse = cacophony. Highly recommend: pad kee mao ( the best!)

Great vibe, food is spicy and the dishes complement each other well.
Server was very knowledgeable and gave great advice on the dishes.

Best Thai food on the westside.

The atmosphere is great and the restaurant has a lively, authentic vibe. However, the food quality was disappointing, the seasoning was quite heavy, and the portion sizes were on the small side.

If you book a reservation from google maps for the Santa Monica location, be aware that as of mid-November 2025, it’s not open for business yet and you will in fact be making a reservation miles away in Atwater Village. Quite a shock to turn up for dinner at a closed restaurant. Not sure if it’s a problem with Google, OpenTable or the restaurant but beware.
