We are the farm-to-table cafe inside the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden owned by Cynthia & Suman Hoque of HoQ Restaurant in the East Village of Des Moines. I was quite excited to experience their tasting menu and was delighted that I was able to get in by calling to reserve a spot the day of the event. Typically, you would have to reserve a spot online for $80. I entered through the gift shop and was ushered in through a side door to the restaurant where the rest of the diners were already sat. I was given a spoon and water without ice which was the perfect temperature for me. The first course was the walleye soup after 15 minutes of waiting. It had good flavor, was hot, but not much else in there beside corn. The next course looked visually appealing, and the filet was cooked perfectly. However, it was not hot. The purple sweet potatoes were nice, but I was not a fan of the collard greens. The one shrimp was good, but left me wanting more. After waiting some more, the sherbet came out. One scoop with sliced apples and two mandarin orange slices. There were some thinly sliced pieces of kiwi as well. The service from the wait staff was perfection. They never let my glass sit empty, and they took plates as soon as you finish them. They were all kind and professional. It was disappointing that the food did not match the level of service. I was still hungry after finishing the meal, and the waiting around was very unnecessary. I’m not sure if they don’t have heat lamps or even a hot box to keep things warm. The chairs were a hard plastic that were very uncomfortable. I left a good tip for the servers, but I won’t be coming back. Its a nice and quiet spot for a couple or group of friends, but not if you go alone.

Came in with my friend for a celebratory lunch after getting a new job offer today. We had Shelby as our server and she was absolutely phenomenal! She helped us understand the curated farm to table menu and told us all about the chef’s offerings for rotating dishes. It was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to return! I proposed to my girlfriend at Flora. I reached out to the team and they were more than happy to make it special. There’s a beautiful corner table they had reserved for us with a great view of the outside gardens. They really went the extra mile to help keep it a surprise! The food was great and pleasantly plated! If the chocolate cake is on the menu, GET IT!
Also if Shae or Ozzy are working, just know you’ll be taken care of!

With Locally sourced ingredients, no foodie can resist the attention to detail in every dish. Everything tastes great and is made fresh there— even the burger buns it turns out!
The baked goods are wonderful; I can tell that quality butter & top notch baking skills go into all the treats. Even the chai, & the iced tea, is thoughtfully blended & made. Everything is very fresh tasting— never too heavy nor too bland.
I like that you can take your meal to go, and sit up in the balcony of The Botanical Garden. It’s so relaxing being surrounded by tropical plants as you sip your Chai & munch your scone.

Overlooking the ponds and city is a relaxing view for our meal. The staff is so very accommodating and attentive, and very warm and friendly. And the food is exceptional. Our lunches were grain bowls, soups, and chicken sandwiches and were enjoyed by all. Everyone in our party of eight would be happy to return when we are again in Des Moines.

Flora is a special spot tucked inside the Des Moines Botanical Garden. What makes it even more special is their commitment to sourcing fresh, local ingredients—every dish is created with intention and looks vibrant, with lots of healthy options to choose from. The cocktail menu is great, too. I love coming here for lunch when visiting the gardens. Great experience every time.

Very rude people work there. We felt like we were not welcome. As members of the Botanical center made us question keeping our membership for next year. Place was dirty. There was a cellphone and someone’s belongings scattered all over the counter where we were ordering. A red headed lady came out to tell us only one person was working so it will be a while. Clearly there were 3 people working that we saw. Anyway we won’t be back to Flora. In view of the manager’s reply, snotty responses seldom resolve bad customer service. Thank you for your attention to this matter

This is my new favorite spot for lunch dates! The food is fresh, local and fantastic. The service is top notch and the atmosphere is light, airy and botanical – you might even get lucky and see a bald eagle fly by! The Botanical Gardens after a delicious meal and craft cocktail is the cherry on top. I can’t recommend Flora enough!!!! Thank you for being my new staple!
