The quality of beers was great! Best cinnamon flavored beer(master merry distort) I had! This beer was spicy but the flavor of cinnamon was not overwhelming at all! Perfect choice for cold winter days! The place is very cozy with a good view.
January 2025:Tucked away in a back street behind the Nashua downtown garage, we just discovered Rambling house, even though it has been around for over two years.
The food was good: chowder, which tastes like Gloucester chowder with fish, potatoes, onions and bacon. Appetizer of muscles, a very generous portion. I had a crabby patty, which was tasty but messy! My husband had the steak and told me it was good. The service was friendly and helpful. The restaurant has multiple levels, if accessibility is an issue, request to be seated on the first floor.
Onion Galette – sweet caramelized onions in a pastry, a great starter for 2. Bread and honey butter was fresh and tasty.
5 spice brazed short rib was amazing. Tender juicy and extremely flavorful with the spice rub.
Chestnut Pork chop was well seasoned and accompanied by tasty sides. Unfortunately served a bit overcooked for my taste (estimate 165). As a result this dish gets a 4, but will try again if they are able to cook to order around medium, medium well (145 – 150F).
Dessert had the mango lime cheesecake. Creamy soft and tasty filling, the top layer that was added however didn’t do it any favors and subtracted from the experience with its rubbery texture and lack of flavor.
Overall a great dining experience – 4.5.
A note on the mussels, we had the half portion which was enough. Rambling’s half portion would be anyone else’s full portion.
April 2025: second time here. Had the ribeye and a salad. The food has been consistently good
Overall food had great quality. Personally I found Everything under-seasoned but as the dining experience went on I think it’s intentional. Just be prepared to have to season to taste.
Potato pancakes were great, could use a little more texture on the inside.
We both got 8oz steaks- cooked to temperature and the cut of meat was tender. Again had to salt and pepper but that’s okay. Local mushroom for a side is served cold and pickled, wasn’t expecting that
Unfortunately didn’t save room for dessert.
Service was pleasant and efficient
The area: Lots of convenient parking on the street or in the public garage directly across the street. It’s a visually interesting, historically industrial area along the canal.
The food: Everything we were served was small-batch, farm-to-table quality. The country style bread with sweet butter was beyond fresh. The wonton appetizer was crispy and exploding with flavor. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and the bacon marmalade absolutely made the dish. The fish & chips was on par with dedicated fish & chips joints in London. Each of the beers in the flight was highly drinkable and executed well to their respective styles.
The atmosphere: A modern farmhouse interior vibe with floor-to-ceiling windows offering great views of the area. It’s a well lit space that is comfortable and quiet. The temperature was just a touch too cold below room temperature but not enough to impact the experience.
The service: Hailey provided great service and was attentive without being smothering. Everything was served promptly and with a smile.
Bonus points: They are among the few restaurants in the US that have hand-held credit card machines (which are standard in every other country). This makes a big difference in the experience as it collapses the typical 5 step process into 1 touch free step.
Typically you have to 1) wait for a bill, 2) hand over your physical card to leave your sight, 3) wait for the server to process the card, 4) finally / eventually return with your card, 5) do math and sign your name. With the handheld credit card machine you can just tap your phone / card, tap the tip amount, and walk out.
