Stopped by Pollo Bacano in Zion and it did NOT disappoint. The food was incredible from start to finish. The empanadas were amazing—perfectly golden, crispy on the outside and packed with flavor inside. Easily some of the best I’ve had.
The tacos were also great, served fresh with well-seasoned meat, warm tortillas, and all the right toppings. The sides, including the rice and beans, were flavorful and made the plate feel complete.
The restaurant itself has a bright, welcoming atmosphere, with beautiful hanging flowers and décor that gives it a fun, vibrant feel. My daughter loved it and was happily eating her empanada the whole time.
Service was solid and friendly, and everything came out quickly.
Overall, a fantastic spot for a family meal or a casual bite. We’ll definitely be returning! Highly recommend Pollo Bacano if you’re in the Zion area.
The old place had terrible ambiance, but this new place, is an enjoyable breath of fresh air. They bring some of the south of the border flavor and atmosphere to Illinois.
I had the Blanco bowl, basically a burrito without the tortilla. In a bowl! And it was wonderful. Just a couple of pepsis for myself, and two cheese quesadillas to bring home to my wife and son.
The new ownership of this location, put a lot of work into it. And I’ll tell you, you would never think it looked like it did before these folks acquired it. It’s amazing. The food is delicious, and the owners are very charming. And one thing I would like to say, when you’re trying to make a phone order, you never know what’s happening in the restaurant at that time. It could have been getting a delivery from a distributor. That is always priority. The amount you pay for your meals counts on it. If you want fast, try McDonald’s! If you want good, this is the place you need to be.
Pros: authentic flavor and feel… The green sauce is fire… similar to the poblano cream sauce at El Camino Kitchen…. not quite that good but similar!!! Steak flavor is great… Seasoned very well…balanced perfect with the onions and cilantro.
Cons: portions are very small… 3 tiny street size tacos… Tiny portions of rice and beans for $15 is a little pricy for me…it was more like a $10-$12 meal…we got 3 of these dinners and one of them was filled with fat chunks in both the beans and the tacos… Very unacceptable at any price!!!
So to wrap it up I’d say it has potential and I will go back to try other menu items but they could definitely do better in multiple categories… Communication was a little sketchy but I’m a white dude from Waukegan so I can spanglish my way around that!!! 6.3/10
We all agreed that the main items were delicious; they said that their burritos were tasty and my chicken was flavorful as well. The sides needed some work, as the rice and beans were a little bland, but were serviceable on the whole.
The few problems we did have—server never asked if we wanted refills, took a very long time to pay—are not unexpected in a new place adjusting to their business patterns, and will probably get better in due time. We will definitely try it again once they have some time to work the kinks out, because overall the food was good.
