They sat us right away. Didn’t check on us for 15 minutes. At that point the waitress seemed checked out. She explained we could have a wine pairing or not. We chose the wine pairing because we were excited to have expertly paired wine for our meal, and we were hoping to know the brand or flavor profile of the wine we were going to enjoy.
At 815 our glass of pinot grigio came out with nothing to pair it with. Also, with no bottle shown and no mention of what brand of wine it is was, I am honestly going to assume it was Franzia or Barefoot.
By 820 I started to listen to the groups around us. All mad. All hungry. All had been there forever. No one wanted to pay. Everyone wanted to leave. I heard them arguing in the kitchen about the soup. The people behind me were starting to get a little loud about their displeasure (not inappropriately so, but they weren’t hiding it anymore)
By 840 I was looking at my phone thinking… We haven’t gotten an appetizer yet, our wines been gone forever, and they “close” in 20 minutes. No servers had checked back in with us, to see if we were still there, still alive, or if we needed more water or drinks OR to apologize for the wait.
At 9 we offered to pay for our one glass of wine and left. The table behind us was just getting their appetizers, but the server couldn’t remember what anybody ordered, so it seemed like they just made four appetizers that they could handle and were trying to see if anybody wanted them. The woman at the table was clearly (rightfully) furious.
This was our first date out since having a baby, and it was very nearly ruined. We ended up finding a wonderful restaurant that fit us in at 9pm, fed us a 7 course Valentine’s day meal, and had us home to our baby by 11.
The food was the highlight. I ordered the lamb bolognese, and it was amazing—rich, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. You can tell they really care about the quality of their ingredients and how the dishes are prepared. Everything came out hot, well-presented, and full of flavor.
We had a reservation but were delayed being seated, even though the room was not overly full. We should have seen the writing on the walls when we arrived, but we wanted to be supportive and stay local. Community relationships are very important, especially for small business owners in the Kingdom. We want our local businesses to do well and thrive, sincerely.
We stayed initially, despite extensive delays because we wanted to support local. When the experience became violent and uncomfortable, with food rushed and inedible, sent back, and courses guaranteed skipped entirely, we chose to leave after 2 and a half hours of trying. Mindful, we watched between 8-10 other people, seated at reservation, walk out prior to us so this was not an US issue.
Drinks did not arrive for nearly half an hour, and the pre-curated menu was served in an unstructured, chaotic way. Our filet was substituted due to shortages and we were kind and agreeable even still. When a 4 top table walked out clearly frustrated we were then served food that had been sitting in the window from their meal at least 15 minutes later, including bisque that had begun to gel. They skipped the other courses and just dropped it off tepid to recoup their apparent loss.
The chef at about that moment began to violently throw plates in the kitchen, and staff were visibly uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable. Multiple tables left before completing their meals.
After nearly three hours, and this scene, we paid what we felt was fair leaving everything behind us.
It seemed the restaurant had forgotten the customer in the stress of trying to protect the money. It was a Valentines Day experience to remember — for all the wrong reasons.
