The halibut dish was especially surprising: the cabbage served with it tasted like pure salt, while the halibut itself had almost no seasoning at all. Half of it was warm and the other half was completely cold, which was really unexpected.
Only chopsticks were set on the table, and no one explained that other utensils were stored in a drawer — we only realized after watching another table take theirs out. For a restaurant with so many positive reviews, the service felt unprofessional and careless. Even though I had stated the reason for our reservation, the staff randomly asked whose birthday it was, which felt awkward and out of place.
The highlight of the night was actually the bill — a receipt that already included a 20% service charge, yet still had the extra tip line marked and emphasized as if we were expected to add more. I couldn’t help but wonder when it became normal for restaurants to openly push for additional tipping on top of an already-included charge. It just felt unnecessary and uncomfortable, especially after such a disappointing meal and experience.
To top it all off, both of us experienced stomach discomfort and diarrhea later that night after the meal. Overall, it was a disappointing experience on what was supposed to be a special occasion.
Highlights are the hiramasa tartare, Maine scallops, financier with pawpaw, tomato sandwich, hiramasa collar, sour cornbread with truffle and uni.
Not exaggerating when I say that every dish we ordered came beautifully prepared and tasted delicious. Also, The caviar! The owner and chef came over to chat with us and make sure we were enjoying our food, the night was very memorable and I can’t wait to go back again.
Met up with some favorite friends from my American Water days. Interesting approach to a menu. There was a $75 fixed tasting menu and then a set of optional extras. I went with the soft shell crab special and everyone else did the burger (since we specifically came on burger Monday). This is a cozy small restaurant in the heart of Philly. We were seated at the counter and were able to watch the food prep. Pretty cool. Service was excellent. Food was outstanding.
Plenty of food to satisfy your hunger in the tasting menu alone, but I am glad we added the extras. The starter was raw Maine scallops in a crème sauce.
Unbelievably good! This was followed by the NJ sushi rice with smoked steelhead.
Well made, filling, and slightly
unremarkable. The mackerel, steamed cabbage and sweet potato made up for it with a perfect bite of these three ingredients! My soft shell crab was very unusual, in a good way, with an interesting creamy sauce and pickled onions. The burger was outstanding!! Lots of nuanced flavors going on. Finally, the winter citrus creamsicle was fun, creative, light, and the perfect ending to a super cool dining experience. Highly recommend River Twice for the adventurous eater!
The real issue here was the wait staff. I made the mistake of coming in on an off night and I came alone. There were two other tables in the restaurant. I planned on just enjoying my burger at the chef’s counter. Upon entering I was greeted by someone who looked annoyed at my very presence. She then became progressively more annoyed by virtually every word out of my mouth. Sitting at the bar, just ordering a burger and nothing else, then requesting it togo because I was so uncomfortable. All of these things seemed to infuriate her.
I have to say, even if it was the best burger in town, I wouldn’t go back. I said it before and I’ll say it again, people who hate the service industry should not be in the service industry.
Cute space though!
I visited during a business trip and sat at the counter, providing ample opportunity to chat with the team and Chef Rucker.
It was a Monday night so they had their (famous?) burger as an add on to the tasting menu, which seemed like a must (literally everybody in the restaurant had a burger, I’m not kidding).
The combination of fine dining style dishes with wine pairing (some wines stronger, some a little uninspired) interrupted by a double cheeseburger is really quite something. For me, it’s an ode to the child in us, which resonated with me – and the burger is just delish.
The other dishes were good overall, again some stronger and some a leaving a little something to be desired (cold spaghetti with white tomato sauce, great idea but unfortunately bland, and the dessert a little “green” as it was essentially raw fruit with creme). I understand the menu changes relatively frequently, so this may be a non issue when you go.
The Chef is an original, and both he and the team took time to chat which made it a great experience.
