It has been a while since we ate dinner here. It is very convenient place to eat dinner before attending a show at the La Jolla Playhouse. Recommend making a reservation to make sure that you have enough time to make the show. The ambiance is nice and modern. We were a party of 4 and had a window seating. Our server was attentive and friendly. The food and drink prices are on the expensive side and dinner entrees are small portions. Food is good.

Came here for a quick bite to eat on a Thursday. They do take reservations but if you walk in right at 5, when they open, you might get a table or you can sit at the bar.
I sat at the bar and had a Moscow mule and the Bunless Kobe Burger (medium). It took about 20 mins for the food to come out and I had to ask the bartender “how much longer for my food?” Otherwise I don’t know when I would’ve eaten.
The mule was good but the bunless Kobe burger didn’t sit right with me. It’s essentially a fancy way to say that you get a burger patty with asparagus and 2 slices of bell peppers drenched in balsamic vinegar with cheese. It wasn’t great but I was hungry. They also don’t have sushi available on Thursdays.
The bartender was nice but seemed distracted. I had to keep grabbing his attention for things.
The space is pretty and if you’re seeing a show at La Jolla Playhouse they’ll put a rush on your food and drinks.
Sadly I won’t be back again but you can try this place for yourself just don’t get the bunless kobe burger.

Service is slow, food was slow. Bartender didn’t know the menu and for 35 dollars you get a burger patty (no fries) on top of a mushroom with 2 pieces of sauteed peppers and 2 asparagas in a balsamic sauce. Such a waste of time and money, there needs to be more restaurants over there serving the play-goers because without competition, this place can charge astronomical prices and just be extremely mediocre. Never again

James place was an unexpected surprise experience. Better in most ways than your average restaurant in La Jolla costing twice as much. I also have to say the bartenders here are a cut above! Great job.

This is the restaurant next to the La Jolla Playhouse, and it *could* have a captive audience and not care about quality. But they do! The beef tenderloin filet had a beautiful brown crust with a melt-away interior that barely requires a knife, with a creme mushroom sauce demi glaze with complex flavors. The garlic rice had a hint of soy which accented the steak, and the broccoli and carrots had a wonderful and interesting flavor. Of course, we topped it off with crème brûlée.

We were seeing a play at the La Jolla Playhouse and because the restaurant is right across the way we decided to eat dinner there before the play. It’s a great space with lots of natural light and nice decor.
Our waitress was friendly and attentive; however, the food was disappointing. For an appetizer, we shared a Rainbow Roll, which had slightly brown avocado and scant slices of fish. My $47 Sea Bass entrée arrived with cold, undercooked vegetables. After raising the issue, the waitress returned with another plate of vegetables that seemed hastily microwaved. The food’s presentation resembled that of a hotel banquet. On a positive note, my partner enjoyed his Spicy Seafood Salad, enhanced by the chef with additional seafood—a thoughtful gesture. The evening concluded with dessert, but the busboy delivered it without any utensils. Upon requesting spoons, he carelessly tossed them onto the table in front of us.
It was a disappointing evening, and we won’t eat at this restaurant again.

We’ve been coming here for a couple of years before going to shows at La Jolla Playhouse. I’ve noticed quite a decline in the food quality and preparation. For example, we always order the Steak Bites as an appetizer, and the past two times we’ve both gotten grissley bites. Last night the salmon on my Caesar was very overcooked and dry. My husband had to order a different main because his short ribs were really awful The meat quality was poor and the sauce was quite sugary.

The sushi was very good. The place was crowded pre-theater, so although Valerie was a good server, I waited a while before I was acknowledged. I would definitely return, but I would plan and advise theater goers to make reservations and go 1 and a half hours before curtain.
The setting is lovely and the menu is varied. In addition to salads, seafood, pastas there is a nice sushi selection, but no sake???!!!
Reasonable pricing, great service should definitely encourage you to visit this spot.

I don’t normally leave reviews but we had such a poor experience. Went for a show at the playhouse and got dinner beforehand. We weren’t in a rush, but after taking our initial drink and appetizer order our waiter completely forgot about us. We ate our appetizer, finished our drinks and water, and waited for over 20 minutes before having to call them over to place our dinner and drink refill requests. The food and water refill came, our drinks never did. The waiter never checked on us despite walking by us constantly even looking at us and our table. We called them over after another 20-25 minutes of seeing if they remembered us, and asked about our drinks, we were told the bar lost the ticket and the drinks would be right out. We finished our meals and sat there with empty plates and water cups, our drinks never showed, despite us seeing them at the bar (we were tempted to just go up and grab them). No one stopped by to pick up our plates, refill our waters, or even ask how we were doing. We finally got the attention of the waiter and asked for the check. We felt completely invisible. The food was fine but expensive for what it was and paired with the poor service unacceptablely expensive.
