If you know, you know. And if you don’t know yet, let me be the one to introduce you.

O!nigiri is one of those places that feels like a little secret, tucked right next to Lotte Plaza Market, which is honestly the perfect location. I’ve made it my personal rule to stop here before I grocery shop, because walking into Lotte on an empty stomach is a financial decision I can no longer afford to make.

I got the salmon, tuna, and sukiyaki, and every single one was exactly what a good onigiri should be: generously filled, perfectly textured rice that holds together just right without feeling like a compressed brick, and flavors that are clean and satisfying without trying too hard. It sounds simple because it is simple. That’s the whole point, and that’s exactly why it’s so hard to do well.

The owners are warm and genuinely friendly in a way that feels real, not rehearsed. The interior is small and charming, lined with anime figures and collectibles that give it this cozy, personal energy, like eating in someone’s lovingly curated living room. Seating is limited, but I usually take mine to go anyway, eating it in the parking lot like a man who has zero regrets.

Here’s the thing though. O!nigiri used to have a spot in Carytown years ago, and when they closed, I took it harder than I’d like to admit. Something about losing a place that does something specific incredibly well hits different. So when I found out they were back, I felt genuinely victorious.

Don’t sleep on this place. It’s a small, perfect thing in a city that deserves more of them.

I drove an hour and a half to come here after seeing a video on TikTok, and it was absolutely worth it. I’ve been wanting to try this place for a long time, so I ordered several different flavors just to sample a variety. Every option was good, but the Kelp one stood out as the most flavorful and truly delicious. The inside of the restaurant is very small, but it’s incredibly cute and cozy. The staff was welcoming and very kind, which made the experience even better. I also ordered the miso soup, and it was so good that I finished it almost immediately. The mochi ice cream was absolutely delicious . Overall, it was a great experience and I would highly recommend this place.

One of the best parts of O!nigiri is the incredibly sweet, kind, and efficient staff, who make the experience enjoyable from start to finish. The restaurant is super cute and thoughtfully decorated. The menu offers a great selection, though the pricing feels slightly high for the value. We especially recommend the spicy tuna. The salmon and karaage (fried chicken) were pleasant but on the simpler side and could use a bit more flavor. As a result, these items tasted somewhat dry when bites consisted mostly of rice and seaweed.

Pretty sizeable onigiri! I tried the Spicy Tuna and the Karaage and both were great. The storefront is cute and has plenty of otaku culture and Japanese decorations! There are some seating inside, but not more than for a few groups at a time.

The last few bites of my Spicy Tuna was packed with flavor. The karaage did fall apart a bit while eating, but it’s still good.

Plenty of vegan options as well.

Overall, hard to get something like this with as good quality in the area especially with a Japanese owner (who is a very nice lady). One of the closest you’ll get to Japanese onigiri without actually going there. Super convenient location too, right next to Lotte.

I’ll definitely come back and try the rest of the menu! I hope new and interesting flavors rotate in to keep things fresh!

ごちそうさまでした!

The shop is really cute! It’s tucked away by the Lotte Market on Broad St, but definitely worth checking out. It has authentic onigiri with a Japanese convenience store vibe!
We stopped in for some lunch and the food was really filling and tasty! It’s definitely great for those on a budget too. I’m recommending it to all of my friends

Real authentic Japanese Onigiri. Onigiri are Japanese rice balls, often triangular or cylindrical, made from steamed rice and typically wrapped in nori (seaweed). They are a popular, portable snack or meal, featuring various savory fillings like salted salmon, tuna, or pickled plum (umeboshi). Onigiri are a staple in Japanese cuisine, found in convenience stores, supermarkets, and specialty shops, and are also a common component of bento boxes.
