The food is exquisite; I particularly enjoyed the grilled steak served with chimichurri sauce and crispy fries. Amazing experience from start to finish! The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was excellent. There was nothing to complain about at all. Everything exceeded my expectations. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Seattle and truly deserving of the James Beard Award recognition. We will 100% be coming back again. Highly recommended!

Wow. That’s how I felt after eating at Sophon! I think there are times you eat at a fancier restaurant and feel disappointed (“I could have eaten something cheaper and it would have been tastier”). That was NOT the case at Sophon. Everything was impeccable. Cute ambience, lovely service, and the food was insane. We started out with the tuna crudo, which was incredibly soft. It just melted in your mouth. And the veggies it came with were so crisp and flavorful. The papaya salad was delicious. Also crisp and full of flavor and fish sauce funk. The absolute star of the show, though, was the pork belly. I think maybe the best bite I’ve had in the last year. So soft and tender, and just packed full of flavor. The marinated egg was also cooked to perfection, and having the egg, pork, and some rice in one bite was amazing. It is a MUST try if you go here. We also got the steak frites, and the loc lac butter and dipping sauce were so unique and delicious. The fries were cooked to perfection as well. I have nothing but praise for this spot. Will be back, absolutely. Thanks for making my birthday special!!

I have been meaning to dine at Sophon in Greenwood/Phinney Ridge area ever since a Cambodian friend raved about them. I am showing my age by saying the restaurant is VERY LOUD, and our table was in a very dark spot in the restaurant. Oddly, they didn’t have enough table lamps for all the dark tables. Our server said they “ran out”. How does that happen? I stalked a departing table to take their rechargeable lamp. Anyway, my expectations were likely too high going in, and I was annoyed before even ordering, turning on our cellphone light to read the menu. The food is pretty good, though not mind-blowing good like the reviews suggest, and we had one bad dish. They offer varied Khmer dishes beyond noodle varieties, which is a plus. Go if you are looking for variety, skip the fish, bring ear plugs, and hope you have a brighter table than ours. Parking is street only.

The Food:
k’tiss dip with crudités, $18 – 4 Stars
We chose the marrow stone blue oyster mushroom option – p’set. The mushrooms are sautéed in Khmer seasonings, fermented bean curd, and coconut milk. The veggies are mildly pickled. They paired surprisingly well and a unique dish to try.
kroeung kumeraage, $15 – 4 Stars
This dish has an option of fried chicken or fried mushrooms. We chose the chicken since we already had mushrooms. Kroeung is the Khmer seasoning. Our server said this dish and papaya salad are amongst the most popular. Since we have a veggie dish, we chose this over the papaya salad (which looks great, too). The chicken is lightly fried, not crispy outside, super tender, and paired well with the kroeung aioli.
trei chmouy tuk tei omperi, $40 – 1 Star
The menu says serves 2 but not really. The is a pan seared fish, make your own fish wrap. We did not know we ordered a DIY dish, which is ok in principle, just not good to be surprised. The menu doesn’t say so; the server didn’t mention it. Luckily, by this time of the meal, we have acquired the little table lamp, which enabled me to see the long fish bones that had not been removed. FIVE of them. The noodles are a pathetic overcooked limp pile. The best part is the turmeric sauce. Do not order this dish.
Epilogue: I happened to walk by Sophon this past weekend. I was surprised to see a sign saying they are temporarily closed to resolve internal issues. (See photo) That is never a good reflection of management. There is now a GoFundMe for the unpaid staff who had to quit their jobs.

The chicken and steak were cooked really well. The chicken was not over-cooked and the steak was a perfect medium rare.
The flavors were fairly interesting.
The dip for the fried chicken was creamy and slightly sweet.
The block of butter on top of the steak was sweet, like brown sugar. I wish it was just a touch more melted.
The fries were plain, similar to what you would get at dicks. I think the fries were the most dissapointing food item.

Very good atmosphere, interesting food. Pricy (16$) but very good mocktail. Chicken appetizer is awesome! Great service and overall atmosphere. Pork belly was delicious but a bit heavy/fatty for my taste.

Delicious & unique food! We ordered the tuna crudo and fried chicken to start which were both fantastic. The fried chicken was crispy without being greasy and I’d definitely recommend the crack sauce. The fish portion was generous and the sauce was punchy with a lot of umami flavor. We split the steak as our main which was certainly the standout. SO flavorful and cooked perfectly. Lastly, we finished with the coffee which had an earthy chicory flavor to it which I loved (partner didn’t care for it much). Can’t wait to go again and try other dishes!

A vibrant spot serving luxurious Cambodian food. The highlight is the fresh ingredients in all the small plates. Both papaya salad and the minced pork were flavorful. The pork had a good funky note to it, but just tad bit too spicy . The highlight is the preservation steak, so far one of the best aged beef I had, tender, great char with a wonderful loc butter and herb sauce. This is the steak worth many repeats great happy hour deals and wine selection. The signature cocktails were too adventurous for me. Overall, this is a gem of asian cuisine. I made a resy w/ 3rd party which the staff placed a time limit, we felt a bit rushed through our meal before they had to give the table to the next party.

Love this place! Went to Sophon by chance a few months ago and wow, were we glad we did. We were seated quickly on a weekend evening despite not having a reservation, and we loved the warm, personal ambiance of the space — family mementos, books, and ceiling fabrics to dampen noise.
The drinks were so delicious and unique, we ended up trying several each. I had the mekong, served in a coconut milk can, which was the perfect level of sweet for me. And the food? Amazing. We had the papaya salad, chicken khmeragee, kha each crouk, and the trei chmouy tuk trei omperl.
Service was wonderful, and part of what made the space stand out. They easily accommodated allergies we had and communicated clearly recommendations for food. What made the restaurant special to me was the personal touch the restaurant has. Their seasonal menus include a personal note from the chef about Cambodian cuisine and culture, which made me even more grateful to enjoy and learn about the food we were served.
Overall, 10/10. So happy they got acknowledged by James Beard too! I hope to come back again soon.

I ate at Sophon several times the first year they opened. I thought the food was good and it was good value back then. I decided to give it another try after not visiting for a year or more. It came as a surprise to see that the ratings online had dropped to very average, but I decided to go anyway. Regrets. The place was packed on a Friday night and the staff was a little overwhelmed, so clearly they have many happy customers still. I found that the menu choices were greatly reduced from a year ago, and my favorite eggplant dish was no longer there. The food came quickly, the portions were tiny, and everything was like a 4 star spiciness – way too much. The trumpet mushrooms dish consisted of literally half a mushroom, sliced thin, and the tomato relish was way too spicy. The seasonal vegetables were overcooked and disappointing. The pork dish was too spicy, it came with raw vegetables and pickled raw cauliflower. The mocktails were good however. I wont be back anytime soon.
