This was my first time visiting Jjang Ga Nae, and unfortunately the experience was disappointing overall. The restaurant was very quiet with only a few customers, and after trying the food, I understood why.
I do want to say that the grandma working there is very nice, she was kind and welcoming. But I still need to be honest with my review.
Right away, I noticed that they don’t give water or anything unless you ask for it. No water cups, nothing.
We ordered 2 Fanta soda, and while I usually don’t mind as long as it tastes fine, the first sip tasted like plastic and like it had been sitting in the fridge for a long time. When I checked the can, I realized it was both expired (Oct. 2025). I couldn’t believe they served me expired soda, especially when the taste made it obvious something wasn’t right. Today I even have an upset stomach, I’m not sure if it’s related to the soda or just a coincidence, but it didn’t leave me feeling good. That’s all I had eaten.
For food, we ordered the beef bulgogi, LA galbi. The beef bulgogi was mostly onions with very little meat, and the flavor didn’t stand out, more like a quick homemade meal than a proper restaurant dish.
The LA galbi was just okay and insides undercooked.
The soybean soup was watery, lacking depth and flavor.
The side dishes were limited. The potatoes were okay, but the rest were bland and forgettable.
Honestly, the entire meal felt like a rushed home-cooked dinner, not a restaurant experience.
Overall, I’d rate this place 2.5 out of 5. The grandma is sweet, but the expired drink, lack of basic service like water, watery soup, and underwhelming dishes make it hard for me to recommend. I’m being honest because I hope things improve.

Excellent Korean food! We had the kimchi pancake, steamed dumplings, dolsot bimbimbap and beef bulgogi. It was all grwat This place is no frills but is cozy home cooking.

Food’s really good. Very flavorful.

Probably one of the better seafood pancakes around, filled with stuff.

Bonchan was nice, stewed potatoes were sweet and the fermented kimchi and pickles were strong.

Kimchi jjigae is what you’d expect. Beef bulgolgi is also what you’d expect. Lot of meat.

They gave us a bit of jjang sauce that’d normally go with noodles. Was really good.

So good— what a meal! I’m fairly unfamiliar with Korean food but the lovely woman running the place let me show her some photos from other reviewers on my phone. Flavorful, filling and homemade, this is a must-try.

I’m not sure what all the cold appetizers were that came when we ordered the fried pork dumplings (which were SO GOOD) but there was defitnely kimchi, pickled radish, onion, pickled cucumber, and potatoes that I’m still dreaming about.

We ordered pork bulgogi which was a skillet of hot and flavorful beef with sautéed onions and peppers. We also got the chajangmyun which is the dish that looks like spaghetti in dark sauce. It has delicately cooked ribs and diced veggies. Both were truly delicious. I can’t wait to try more Korean food!

We came for a date night and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. Even though we were the only customers, the owner was watching videos loudly on her phone, making it hard for us to talk.

The food was very bland. The spicy tofu soup lacked flavor, and the beef bibimbap had only a tiny amount of beef. The seafood pancake was the only dish we enjoyed. No drinks (not even water) were offered, and we left feeling quite thirsty.

We won’t be returning.

Came here for the very first time today. Yes it feels like you’re eating at a grandma’s house, with the expectation of getting a warm feeling and cozy meal from a nice grandma. I was by myself. A little while after I arrived, there were two men that came. I ordered before them and waited for about 20 mins, however, the men’s food and side dishes were given to them first, whereas I had not been given anything even though I arrived first. When my food finally came, I quickly finished one of the side dishes, as I was hungry and had waited a long time. When I asked for one more of the side dish (the one with the salty fish, on the top right of the picture), she lied about it and would not give more. She said, “No more today. No more of that. You finished it.” When I wanted to wash my hands, apparently someone was in the restroom, so this grandma directed me to use the sink outside of the restroom. Right across from the sink was a whole (more than half-filled) batch of the side dish that I asked for. When I said, “oh you have some,” she said, “oh they just made it, they just made it. No more for you.” So….. it was not a nice feeling to be lied to, to feel like you’re not deserving of just a side dish. This restaurant definitely just lost at least one customer. There are other establishments with just as good food if not better that would give what the customer asks for, not lie to a customer, especially when it’s just about one side dish. I would not recommend this restaurant.

K-drama fans, this feels like it could be your secret spot. The kind of restaurant that not many people have been to, but one that you’d recommend to your friend to impress them with a “hole-in-the-wall” local experience.

The food is delicious and comes in good amounts and all at a fair price. Taking a look around at the other patrons, it certainly feels authentic. I’ve gone there a few times and have hardly heard a word of English from the staff or the customers. Love it!

If you’re looking for a more authentic slice of Korea here in South Jersey, this is the place to go to. Are there other Korean restaurants? Certainly! There seem to be more and more every day. But for me, this is the one that makes me feel like I’m back in a small shop in Korea.

The definition of homely. The restaurant can hold up to 20 people and gives an urban feel. The food was undeniably on point, the dumplings were unique and delicious and the gan jajiangmyun was more than fulfilling on a rainy day. Surely will find time to try other items on the menu

Nice mom and pop shop. Food was delicious . My short ribs were a bit on the sour side instead of savory. Probably won’t order again but everything else was amazing . Staff didn’t really check in , service was bare minimum. I will most likely return though to support small business.
