Reviews
First time I ate here and I’m a local. But I review lots of restaurants around this area and the within the city. So here is my blunt review with no personal attacks intended. Also, I didn’t review their service or their atmosphere as I ordered this and had it delivered to me via DoorDash (the driver Sarah was super kind, and professional).
I was a little disappointed right from the start when I noticed my fried rice hardly had any peas or carrots, even though the description said it would. The flavor was also a bit lacking—just needed a little more seasoning or salt. They do provide soy sauce packets, but I expected the food itself to be more flavorful without having to add extras.
For the price (about $42 before tipping the driver), I expected a lot more—both in portion size and quality. Other Asian spots in the area give you more food for less money, and the dishes tend to match their descriptions better. That’s for just a combo fried rice and a Volcano roll (which was good, not great and $16 for Mabank, nope)
Overall, the meal was just “okay,” but definitely not worth the price point. I probably won’t order from Yamato’s again. If you’re looking for better flavor and value, you’re better off going to Kyonekko Hibachi Express (Food Truck) in Mabank. Their portions are comparable—maybe even a bit larger—and the quality and pricing are noticeably better.
Not much value here, but decent sushi in GBC… That’s unheard of. I guess it’s still cheaper than driving to Dallas or Tyler for sushi.
UPDATE – it has been a few years since I reviewed Yamato. It is now my favorite Asian food place in the area. Prices are good, food is great, they have worked out the kinks.
Not only is it my favorite Asian food place around CCL, it’s also hands down my favorite place to get scallops.
The scallops are almost always perfectly cooked, and of good size/portions. That’s hard to find, even in DFW.
I had the Bento dinner which came with a choice of soup or salad. I went with the Miso soup and was glad I did. Delicious! The rest of the Bento dinner consists of a spring roll, fried rice, four different pieces of fantastic and fresh sushi, pan-fried Gyoza, six pieces of California roll, and a nice little portion of pickled ginger and Wasabi. It was all super tasty and fresh. My wife started with the lobster Rangoon. It was six pieces of perfection! Piping hot, light, not greasy, and chock full of flavor with a nice sauce on the side. For a main, she had chicken fried rice that was just as good as everything else. It’s so refreshing to have a choice around the lake area other than the cookie-cutter buffets, Mexican food, and the usual deep-fried fare. Everything came together for a really enjoyable dining experience and we’ll be back for sure. Check out the menu ahead of time because they have a huge selection of goodies and when you’re there take a peek at the sushi counter up front that has all the fresh fish you’re being served on display. The total for both dinners and two beverages was only 40 bucks! A bargain for what we got.
