Long-standing neighborhood go-to executing classic sushi in an understated yet refined space.

This is the kind of restaurant I’ll keep returning to. We walked in for dinner at 9, the atmosphere is nice and cozy, and there’s jazz playing in the background.
There’s a variety of dish choices ranging from skewers, sushi, hand roll, tempura, and ala carte.
We got vegetable tempura and a large plate fried shrimp & spicy tuna sushi as our appetizers, and a set dinner that came with salad, miso soup, rice, and two main courses (we had chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki).
The salad was refreshing, love the sesame dressing. The fried shrimp & spicy tuna sushi was SOOO GOOD❗️the spicy tuna along with the fried shrimp just paired perfectly with the ginger and wasabi. This is literally my favorite dish of the night really couldn’t have enough, and I wish I could try more of their sushi plates!
The salmon teriyaki and the chicken teriyaki are also delicious and both generous in portion (you get two main courses with about 36, which is a really great deal imo)! It also came with three pieces of tempura, including two veggies and one shrimp tempura. The fry coating was crispy and the meat texture of fried shrimp was sweet and tender. Their teriyaki sauce has just the right balanced taste of sweet and savory, and it never goes wrong with rice.
The service was excellent. all the staffs were friendly and approachable, and they gave us a lot of ginger and wasabi when we asked for some more.
Overall, I really enjoyed the food and the ambiance of the restaurant. A true hidden gem in the neighborhood. It definitely has become one of my fav Japanese/ sushi spot around here.

I had an amazing meal at U Zen. It’s a true family run restaurant, and you can feel how much care they put into every detail. The fish was incredibly fresh, the kind of quality that stands out right away, and the rice was perfect—light, balanced, and never overcooked. I grew up in a fishing community, so freshness is something I really appreciate, and they absolutely deliver. Southern California has plenty of Japanese restaurants, but this one has become one of my favorites for its quality, consistency, and the heart the family puts into every dish. If you appreciate food made with pride and real craft, this is a place worth seeking out.

One of the best sushi experiences I’ve had in quite some time. Also one of the few times i enjoyed every part of my meal start to finish. I found the fish to be of high quality and very fresh. What impressed me even more was the skilled simplicity of how it was all prepared, definitely my complements to the chefs. The tempura was fried perfectly (I love broccoli tempura, but it’s rare that i get some that keeps the veggie still so fresh while so crisp), and the spicy tuna surprisingly used no mayo and fully emphasized the flavor of the fish. The Japanese scallops with just a hint of salt and lemon, melted in my mouth. On the top of the food being delicious, the service was great as well. The staff was very attentive and quick to handle our needs. The cost is a bit on the higher end, but well worth it. They also offer a happy hour after 8pm til closing, which is a great deal. Overall i found everything about this restaurant exceeded my expectations.

Got a delivery order the day after Thanksgiving… but is that an excuse? Food was NOT fresh! The edamame was old and seemed to have been refrigerated for awhile… the spicy tuna tasted less than fresh. Even the wasabi tasted old. I mean it didn’t make me sick or anything, but every other sushi restaurant I have used in recent memory was fresher! Especially at this mid level price point, very disappointing! The sukiyaki was not bad, though.

One of my favourite places in LA. You cannot go wrong with both the quality and value of what’s on offer. Do yourself a favor and come here. Especially for the price, it might be the best sushi in LA.
The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the sushi chefs incredibly experienced. I do my best to come here whenever I can, and you should too.

The most underrated sushi restaurant in west LA! Order the nigiri for an optimal experience. The salmon belly is next level.
Love U-zen, Andy, and the rest of the staff. I take friends here any time anyone comes to visit me in LA. It’s the best!
Lastly — the reviewer who claimed the staff were speaking Korean is wrong. The restaurant is Japanese-owned and run, and has been for decades.

An awesome old school Japanese restaurant in Santa Monica. They have a daily lunch bento and great lunch specials. I had a tempura and sashimi combo, while my partner had a bento. The inside is nice and quiet with lots of room to sit. There’s also a parking lot behind the restaurant. Service was very nice and fast, and of course, the food is excellent! In particular, the sashimi was thick and fresh. We are lucky to have so many good Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles!

Strongly recommend coming for Saturday lunch for the special weekend bento box. What goes into it changes weekly, but you can be assured it’s absolutely loaded and positively delicious. Staff were exceedingly friendly. In addition, they have daily lunch specials and omikase. I get the impression that they pride themselves on repeat customers, and with great food and hospitality I can see why.

Super authentic , fresh, affordable sushi. Bento box is huge.
The rolls could have been more creative.
Chirashi bowl could have had more fish. But everything was delicious. Especially the eel.
