Great food and wonderful people at Mochilero! There are many dishes that I keep coming back for because they’re so good. If you’re a foodie, come in and prepare to be amazed by the presentation! If you like nachos and tacos you’ll find some of the best here. Lot’s of other great choices too. Tequila selection is very nice. Happy hour and Taco Tuesday are a blast. I bring my dog and we have fun on the patio too!

I ordered takeout and sampled several items from the menu. The chicken tortilla soup was enjoyable, though it could benefit from a deeper, more developed flavor. The short rib chile negro bowl had a similar issue, well prepared, but the overall seasoning felt muted.

The carne asada burrito stood out as the strongest dish. The chimichanga-style preparation, fried until golden and crispy, added a nice texture and richness. That said, the flavor balance could be improved, as the ingredients were not evenly distributed throughout the burrito.

On a return visit, I would likely customize the burrito by focusing on carne asada and rice and adding tomato either grilled or fresh

This spot offers a refreshing take on Mexican cuisine, blending traditional flavors with a light, modern twist. I had the chance to speak with one of the owners, who shared how his travels across various countries inspired and enriched his already deep understanding of the food. That global influence really comes through in the dishes—they’re creative, vibrant, and full of personality. On top of that, the staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience feel warm and inviting from the moment you walk in.

We love Mexican food! I’m usually not that hyped about a new restaurant, but there’s this amazing place in the Horizon Shopping Center. It’s called Mochilero Kitchen in Scottsdale, and it’s one of the best scratch kitchens serving real, authentic Mexican food. “Mochilero” means “backpacker” in Spanish, so basically, they take you on a food trip through different parts of Mexico. The restaurant, owned by brother and sister duo Jorge Cota and Meliza Miranda, draws inspiration from various regions of Mexico, offering a modern twist on traditional dishes. Their craft taco selection was to die for. I went with the Mochilero trio, $16.00, a choice of 3 tacos, rice, and beans. I selected Papa Brava, their potato taco, Carne Asada, and a Baja fish taco. I couldn’t decide which one I liked best; everything was packed with flavor, probably the best potato taco I’ve tried. My wife had the “El Mochilero” lunch plato, $18.00, a cheese Chile relleno with a choice of enchilada and taco. All the flavors were balanced; none of the ingredients were overpowering or too spicy. They have brunch on the weekends, daily happy hour from 2:30-5:00 pm with drink specials and Bonitas. We can’t wait to go back for happy hour to order a bunch of Bonitas to try different things.

What a difference for this visit. Unfortunately- Not so good.
We have a Taco Tuesday group and try a different Mexican restaurants each week. We had previously tried Mochilero Kitchen and loved it. So we returned with a few new folks.

This visit was really a significantly different experience to our first. The service was poor (we had the same server) and the food not so good. The tacos were lukewarm and the tortillas soggy. Orders were incorrect but we simply lived with it. The queso was not flavorful.

Service was poor. Very challenging to get any attention. Waters never refilled, difficult to get drinks and no one even asking how the meal was or if all was okay. There was staff there but only one server.

They were Quick to deliver the Checks (bills) and move us on our way.

Quite disappointing compared to our first visit.

The inconsistent service and food quality will have us questioning another return.

Felt a bit sad to have such a mediocre experience since our first visit was outstanding.

This visit fell flat very flat.

I would have given it an overall rating if 2, but bumped it up due to our first Experience having been so great.

A new experience for me at this location. I’ve been here twice now and the food, service and atmosphere are great!
The salso trio let’s you experience their different “heats”. Several vegetarian options if that matters to you. The skirt steak on my first was done perfectly and accompanied by a great selection to complete the platter. Our server Grant, on our second visit, was great. The bar wall has a neat looking appeal and the somewhat open kitchen look is a great touch. Definitely should be on your list to try out.

Ahhhhmazingggggg!!!!!! Service was top tier, food was top tier, atmosphere top tier! No complaints. They just opened a couple days ago and weren’t expecting to be busy tonight with the two servers they had their hands full. Our server was as attentive as she could be while helping 6+ tables. The guac and plaintain chips were fire . I also tried the pork belly with guac and had the grilled marinated octopus and it did not disappoint! I ordered the butter cake for dessert to go and it was delicious, it’s not located on the menu but ask your server . 100000/10 I’ll be a returning customer for sure!

Very very very chill atmosphere. Our server was amazing. They have fried pork belly and guacamole. Guacamole is very fresh and pork belly seasoned perfectedly. They have plantain chips as a replacement and thank God because I’m gluten and corn intolerant. Chips were PERFECT! The sweetness added to the guacamole.

Entree wise I ordered the scallops presentation is amazing. Scallops are my favorite seafood and I love the fishy taste. This did not. The sauce and the oil made the scallops slightly lighter in flavor with a very casual subtle explosion. It was good but not for me. I placed a replacement, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I’m placing the review now because ima forget later. our newest spot for sure though.

Edit: I got the 20 dollar pork belly with the pickled stuff. 10/10. Good lord it’s amazing

We dined at Mochilero kitchen for the first time and truly enjoyed our experience. The restaurant is in North Scottsdale bringing an excellent addition to the culinary scene is near McDowell Mountain Ranch so easily accessible for all of us in this area.

The hostess and weight staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome. There was ample seating for us when we arrived around 5 PM on Friday however by 6 PM the restaurant was pleasantly full.

The food was delicious from start to finish while it was annoying to have to buy chips and salsa instead of receiving at the table, we found them to be high-quality, light and crispy.

My wife and I both ordered short rib based plates. She the enchiladas and I got the burrito. They were both delicious and very filling. The drinks were good and dessert was tasty.

Will definitely be back and hope our neighbors enjoy the restaurant as well so it stays in our community for years to come

Their Taco Tuesday deal (3 tacos with a side for ~$12) is very worth it, not sure about paying full price any other day. We came in late, about 40 mins before closing on a Tuesday night and were seated immediately. There were ~4 other parties in the restaurant but their service for us felt very slow (to take our order, to check in on us, to bring us the check). They didn’t refill our water at all, even though we requested more water. My favorite taco was the Al pastor.
