Eating at Pilar’s is like eating at a friend’s home. The restaurant is small, but cozy with thoughtful decor. Silvia and Espy are always there, serving dishes with a smile. The tamales are always excellent. Pilar’s is one of those places that truly makes Ann Arbor special. True local gem!!

Authentic and culture oriented delights. The food was delicious and well prepared. The flan was so creamy and sweet reminded me of the way my mom would make it.

One of the few places offering a vegan tamale. They are delicious! Cute and cozy atmosphere with super sweet associates. I can’t wait to try a dessert tamalito!

A little hole in the wall.
You wouldn’t expect this awesome food in this location. Buried in a little strip mall.

My partner found in on Google Maps.
Since we were going to be in Ann Arbor during the day we were trying to find a place for lunch

We both had Tamales. I normally do not care for the traditional beef or chicken Tamales. I had The spicy pulled pork Tamales. Totallyoutof this world. I had two . Enjoyed every bite.

When you need love, food, hope, joy, go here. Sylvia is living her vocation; she is a staple of Ann Arbor; don’t miss out on spending time and eating here.

Tamales and pupusas are meant to be eaten with salsa and curtado; which is always a magical combination of flavors. Horchata is so good I can’t resist drinking the whole thing at once.

Today I tried the jalapeño and cheese tamale – steaming and slathered with salsa and plenty of curtado. It was like a grilled cheese and a tamale had a baby. So good.

We have been eating Pilar’s and become friends with Sylvia. She is an incredibly positive and generous person who continuously thinks of others and giving back to the community. We love supporting her local business. Each year, we cater at least one football tailgate with Pilar’s food and every one of our guests love that game! If you haven’t eaten her tamales, papusas, casamiento, or curtido salad, you are missing out. Great vegetarian options as well.

I love tamales, who doesn’t love tamales?! After 2 years of driving by and thinking “Tamales!!!” I finally decided to stop in on a whim with my son. It was like going home. The food was fresh and delightful, there are vegan options as well. In addition to food that feeds your soul you will also find jewelry, pottery, place mats, and other beautifully made items for your home. The woman helping us was warm, kind, and thoughtful. It’s a wonderful place I hope to visit often.

Perfectly encapsulates what great food should be. Every dish is superb and made with great care, ingredients are fresh and top notch, and the staff are genuinely kind and loving people. Every item on the menu will treat you well, but make sure to always get plantains because they put every other plantain in Michigan to shame.

Simple but superb tamales and pupusas. Very delicate masa, beautifully seasoned with savory spices in the sauce but not too much heat for the people who are worried about that. We tried a variety of flavors and enjoyed them all.

The pupusas were the worst I have ever had. They were not made fresh, they were the ones that you can get in the frozen food section.

I remember getting these pupusas at the grocery store and thought they were a very poor excuse for pupusas but were a quick snack on par with microwave pizza rolls. The ones they have at this restaurant are worse than that. Absolutely terrible.

If I could give negative stars I could, it’s bad.

I don’t normally leave reviews for bad restaurants, but I just had to this time. The audacity to charge as much as they do for these pupusas is crazy. It’s highway robbery. You can get the real thing for much cheaper elsewhere. I got 2 “pupusas”, plantains, and a horchata for almost $30.

How can the worst pupusas I’ve ever had also be the most expensive? it blows my mind.

The plantains were good though
