I really like using Cafe Rio for catering so it’s a bummer when I try to dine in there and have a bad experience. There are several big problems with how they run it. Top of the list is Kiosks. They are terrible. It always takes a really long time for multiple people to order. Then we tried to use rewards. It was impossible. We got the worker to help us because the QR code didn’t work. Then the kiosk failed after the payment because of the reward and it dropped our whole order. Order again… same thing. They end up trying to take our order at the window. Kiosks are the #1 issue. The kiosk setup also makes it so if you do have to talk to a worker it’s a bother. They aren’t watching for people to talk to them and the closest person is a station making dishes with their back to you. Then they pack everything like a to go order. Not a huge fan of that in general, but it also creates a lot more trash. I don’t think I’ve ever been in there when the trash wasn’t full with bags sitting on top of the trash can (picture). Every time. And the trash can tops have a hole cut out like you would drop your trash in from a tray… but the hole is way too small to stuff these big to go bags into. It’s like the person who made the call to do all to go orders didn’t think that it was going to 2x the trash and that they needed different trash can openings. Problem 3 is the drink bar. I’m a fan of their drink bar generally. In this case it was 2 hours before close and they already cleaned it up. This is also the second time I was there that the syrups were empty. So the food is good for quick service tacos/burritos, but the setup at this location is bad. Probably fine for drive through.

I don’t think I’ve seen any other location as bad as this one. Not only did an online pickup order take 2 hours to be ready after I arrived 15 minutes after placing it but the food wasn’t edible. The lettuce and pico were so old it was watery soup under it, the cheese was rubber, and it tasted horrible. I felt sick to my stomach after a few bites. There was no communication with updates on how long the delay was going to continue to be either. Just bad all around. Not coming back to this location.

I’ve always like Cafe Rio. Came in tonight at 5:40 and was surprised to see that the traditional ordering was gone and it was kiosk or app ordering. Now, at 6:29, still no food (burrito and salad). So many people sitting around waiting with me. Like zombie land. They’ve lost sight of customer experience and production.
Not an employee issue, but an ownership/leadership issue.
Coat Vida sounds real good right now.

I’m pretty easy going and love automation. But the new screens to order and not a food line doesn’t work here. Just ordering your food takes forever. And then they are extremely understaffed and with only 3 people in front of us it took 35 minutes to get our good. Walked in straight to kiosk, took 6 minutes to order for 4 people, then waited 35 minutes wiling basically nobody else in the store. Also, all
Trash cans completely full when they are this slow is crazy.

Update: Cafe Rio reached out and generously credited my account. The situation was annoying, but I feel like they made it right in the end.
Update: I paid for extra steak, and they gave me hardly any. They also didn’t have any of the drink that I had ordered, so that was a waste as well.
I placed an order for a later pick up. I showed up when the app said it would be ready. As of now, I have been waiting for over an hour, and there are still several orders ahead of me somehow. While I’ve been here, cars are just pulling through the drive through and picking up their food. Super frustrating that I ordered ahead and still had to wait for this long.

This location only has kiosk ordering, which is an absolute nightmare for customization. Additionally, the kiosks are extremely unintuitive to use with the app and to redeem points. After placing an entire order, the payment failed when I tried to use points and the whole transaction was cancelled. Bring back real people. The kiosk ordering is complete garbage.

I’m going to pile onto the one-star reviews here. And below, we’ll talk about why!
I’m a big fan of managing expectations. I’m not expecting Michelin stars here, but I’m also – reasonably, I think – expecting a better experience than the Taco Bell across the street. I used to be full-bore “Team Cafe Rio,” but am now just going to advocate Costa Vida.
Let’s discuss the experience dining in here:
Walk inside. You’re greeted by some kiosks. It’s kinda unintuitive. Ultimately I end up ordering tacos – one chicken, one fire-roasted steak, with beans and rice. I had a gift card that the point of sale system apparently can’t read – so you’ve got to enter a 20-odd digit card number and then a PIN if you expect to use a gift card.
I waited about fifteen minutes for my order; I should note that I was the only one in the place at the time. Got my food, and have the following observations:
– The steak was a tiny portion and was cold-ish. Like, I worked fast food as a kid, and getting people their food while still warm was a goal we usually strived to hit.
– The chicken was also overcooked and not hot. It definitely had “We have had this in the warming rack for longer than we should have” vibes.
– The tacos were accompanied by… nothing. Lettuce? Nope. Cheese? Also no! Onions? Nope. It’s meat, on a small tortilla. And that’s literally it. And the meat wasn’t even centered on the tortilla. The beans and rice were fairly small portions.
The owner seems to have the same platitudes going for everybody that complains, but don’t seem to be doing anything about it. There are “Now hiring” signs out front (including a “front of house” position – for what, exactly? This place mandates kiosk ordering, so there isn’t even a front of house position at present). This place just feels like penny-pinching (leave things in the warming racks, mandate kiosk ordering, even the interior fixtures are literally metal chairs on concrete floors) taken to its extreme; it’s nothing like the Cafe Rio experience of a decade ago.
Go to any of the other places open in Cedar Hills for a better eating experience.

The kiosk is stupid, we tried redeeming a coupon and after we tried paying, it reset the order. Happened twice. We had to order in person and the system isn’t made for that. On of allat I asked for pinto beans on my nachos and they gave me black beans. smh.

I used to work at this location and very close by, but was disappointed when my wife showed me that her steak bowl had about three pieces of meat, no beans, and a lot of vegetables. My wife loves Cafe Rio’s food, but this was disappointing. Other than that, the staff seems friendly and my burrito was good.

Can someone please tell me why the Cedar Hills location DEprioritizes customers who physically show up to the restaurant to eat? Waiting in the cold restaurant for 30 mins while drive thru and online orders take prescendence is disturbing. Let’s just see if anyone really cares at Cafe Rio. All of the patrons here appear unhappy to wait like this. Sad. Cafe Rio used to be great!
