During a recent visit to my old neighborhood in Spring Valley, I stopped at Maranatha Restaurant — a modest, buffet-style Haitian eatery that captures the essence of home cooking from Haiti itself. What first greets you isn’t the décor but the fragrance: rich, peppery sauces mingling with the aroma of fried meats and simmering legumes. It’s an unmistakable scent — comforting, nostalgic, and unmistakably Haitian.

The exterior is unassuming, the kind of place you might drive past if you didn’t know better. The building looks aged and could use cosmetic refreshing, but in truth, it fits the character of the neighborhood — authentic, lived-in, and genuine. Inside, the layout is straightforward and serviceable. The space is small, with limited seating, and the entrance could benefit from modernization, yet the restaurant’s warmth comes not from the design but from the food itself.

The buffet selection is extensive. I sampled griot, fried turkey in sauce (dinde fri ak sòs), mayi moulen ak pwa nwa (cornmeal with black beans), fried fish, rice and beans, chicken in sauce, legim with white rice, and a comforting bowl of bouyon. Every dish showcased authenticity and care. The meats were tender and infused with deep seasoning, the sauces perfectly balanced — flavorful without being oily, spicy without overwhelming the palate. Even the rice, often overlooked elsewhere, was seasoned to perfection, aromatic, and textured just right. Each bite carried the unmistakable taste of home-style Haitian cooking done properly.

The serve-yourself buffet format is efficient, and during off-peak hours, the cashout process is quick and courteous. At busier times, the energy rises — the space can feel crowded and noisy — and while the staff keep the food well-rotated and hot, the serving area could use more frequent wiping during rushes.

One pleasant surprise is the pricing. Plates are weighed, allowing diners to build their own combinations, and our generous selection — enough for several favorites — cost less than two comparable meals in Florida. For the quality, portion size, and authenticity, the value is outstanding. Locals might view the pricing as standard, but for anyone familiar with Haitian cuisine elsewhere, it’s a bargain worth appreciating.

Parking is free, though the lot is small and can be tricky to navigate during peak hours. Still, having parking at all in this part of town is a welcome advantage.

Maranatha Restaurant may not impress with aesthetics, but it more than redeems itself with substance. It’s the kind of place where flavor triumphs over form — where the food tells the story of a culture, a people, and a heritage. For those craving an honest, soulful taste of Haiti in Rockland County, Maranatha remains one of the few places that still cooks from the heart.

There’s no parking. The parking lot is very tight. Someone almost hit my car while I was inside. It was a good thing that I was paying attention. Inside this restaurant is unorganized. No one greeted me. People were just coming in and out. People were cutting in front of others to go get food. It was just a turmoil, disorganized.

They could’ve gotten 5 stars but they’re constantly always out of pickliz. Nothing is worse than making your plate and at checkout finding out there’s no condiments to go with your food. It’s the equivalent to a Chinese restaurant being out of soy/duck sauce. Very frustrating

The food is always good. But the older woman cashier that works on Saturday mornings is always unfriendly and cold. She saw a line and that’s when she chose to refill everything. She never says hi and is just unprofessional. I try to avoid Saturdays here bc of her. Other than the terrible customer service, the food never disappoints and always a variety of dishes to choose from.

The food is excellent, and I love to support my local business. Their set-ups are ok to me . There are some menus missing on the buffet..the majority of foods are there in general…also the parking is very tight…

Earlier last week I was in a crunch to get Haitian food for family that are picky eaters. So I went to Maranatha for the first time and ordered food. To my great pleaser, the food was excellent! Their food is fresh, well seafined and prepared exactly as I wanted and available on time. (-:
