The exterior is unassuming, the kind of place you might drive past if you didn’t know better. The building looks aged and could use cosmetic refreshing, but in truth, it fits the character of the neighborhood — authentic, lived-in, and genuine. Inside, the layout is straightforward and serviceable. The space is small, with limited seating, and the entrance could benefit from modernization, yet the restaurant’s warmth comes not from the design but from the food itself.
The buffet selection is extensive. I sampled griot, fried turkey in sauce (dinde fri ak sòs), mayi moulen ak pwa nwa (cornmeal with black beans), fried fish, rice and beans, chicken in sauce, legim with white rice, and a comforting bowl of bouyon. Every dish showcased authenticity and care. The meats were tender and infused with deep seasoning, the sauces perfectly balanced — flavorful without being oily, spicy without overwhelming the palate. Even the rice, often overlooked elsewhere, was seasoned to perfection, aromatic, and textured just right. Each bite carried the unmistakable taste of home-style Haitian cooking done properly.
The serve-yourself buffet format is efficient, and during off-peak hours, the cashout process is quick and courteous. At busier times, the energy rises — the space can feel crowded and noisy — and while the staff keep the food well-rotated and hot, the serving area could use more frequent wiping during rushes.
One pleasant surprise is the pricing. Plates are weighed, allowing diners to build their own combinations, and our generous selection — enough for several favorites — cost less than two comparable meals in Florida. For the quality, portion size, and authenticity, the value is outstanding. Locals might view the pricing as standard, but for anyone familiar with Haitian cuisine elsewhere, it’s a bargain worth appreciating.
Parking is free, though the lot is small and can be tricky to navigate during peak hours. Still, having parking at all in this part of town is a welcome advantage.
Maranatha Restaurant may not impress with aesthetics, but it more than redeems itself with substance. It’s the kind of place where flavor triumphs over form — where the food tells the story of a culture, a people, and a heritage. For those craving an honest, soulful taste of Haiti in Rockland County, Maranatha remains one of the few places that still cooks from the heart.
I like to pick up time to time and have a great traditional island food.
Clean and good price food!
