This might just be my favorite (and definitely most frequented) restaurant in NYC. Literally everything on the menu is great, but be sure to order some of their northwestern Chinese regional specialties! The Lanzhou beef noodle soup is light, fragrant, hearty, delicious, and an INSANE steal for NYC!!! You can pick what kind of hand-pulled noodles you want–I usually get wide noodles. 🙂 I also am obsessed with their lamb pilaf–it has carrots, raisins, and cabbage pickles, and it’s so good! Some of my other favorites include the cold eggplant, wide noodles in chili oil, peppery fried chicken, fried pork, and cabbage pickles. And while you’re at it, pay a visit to Whale Tea next door!
I’ve always had good experiences with service as well! I’ve never had to wait for a pick-up, and their dine-in service is also super fast. You can order everything with a QR code, which means you can keep ordering more if you’re still hungry. They never leave you without water, which is important if you’re eating spicy food!
TLDR: awesome food with northwestern Chinese specialty, speedy service, and insanely good prices for NYC.

Dunhuang is a gem on the Upper West Side. The noodles are genuinely authentic—springy, chewy, and full of that “hand-pulled” bite, with broths and sauces that taste deeply savory rather than overly salty or sweet. Everything came out hot and well-portioned, and you can tell the kitchen takes pride in getting the flavors right.
Service was another highlight: friendly, attentive without hovering, and happy to offer suggestions if you’re deciding between noodle styles. Overall, a cozy spot with real comfort-food energy and consistently good execution. I’ll definitely be back whenever I’m craving proper noodles.

I think the dishes related to Dunhuang cuisine are actually pretty good. The other dishes, though, might not be as authentic. But the lamb is genuinely delicious — anyone who likes lamb would definitely enjoy it

I find the food here just fabulous and the prices very fair. There is currently a prawn special and it’s so fresh as if it just came from the market. Great presentation and attention to details like serving at an optimal food temperature (i.e., hot dishes not scalding, cold ones not like right out of a fridge, but just right). Staffers aren’t there to be your friends but instead are very efficient. Well done!

Ordering is completely done on your phone using QR codes.
Pricing is reasonable. Service is fast.
Would be nicer if it was labeled which dishes were spicy.

Came to this restaurant with a friend who is from Northwestern China so you know from the get-go this place has to be pretty amazing! Really enjoyed eating signature beef noodle where you can choose 5 diff noodle options (fun!) and it’s 9 bucks. Quality and portions were great. Also beef Tenderloin soup is a must! So tangy and flavorful but its 18 bucks and not that big so you should share it with others as an appetizer. Will def come back again.

The food was OK. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was pretty good. I ordered Fried Rice with shrimp, fish with cabbage soup, pork ribs, and the fermented egg for our dessert. I liked the fried rice the best out of all I ordered. Fermented egg can be more fermented.

This place is ridiculous. They have absolutely no respect for anyone. DON’T come here! You can actually see different social statuses when dining there. People who came in later than me tipped because they were dining in, but since I was ordering takeout, they gave the later ones first. There’s no first-come, first-served order. They prepared everything for everyone dining in, regardless of how late they arrived, and then served the takeout last. I ended up waiting about 10 minutes longer than the people who came in later than me.

Visit thousands of times with friends to have lunch and dinner after class. No pre-cook food at all!! That’s the reason I love to visit. Noodles and fried lamb are our best dishes. Recommended
