As a vegetarian, I loved the options here. We had sushi that contained truffle mushrooms and it was wonderfully tasty. They also have Impossible salmon and Impossible tuna. Their cocktail menu was fun. Dessert was a Dome of chocolate covering a creme surrounded by a raspberry puree. The macron was a nice added bonus.

Enjoyed a great meal here. The cocktails are really good and sushi was fresh and delicious. We liked everything we tried.

They had a live DJ playing some cool music and the vibe was awesome. I’ll definitely be back, and hopefully she’ll be playing again!

New restaurant inside hotel Nikko in union square, the food is so delicious! I got a combo of the appetizers, sushi, sashimi, and the lamb entrees with some wine and everything was well seasoned and executed. The DJ was a nice touch to the lounge feel, the space was big enough where it felt cozy but had a fun atmosphere!

Recently, I was invited to dinner by a few friends of mine in the Union Square area, and I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at a Hotel Restaurant of all things. Kanpai is Hotel Nikko’s newly renovated restaurant, mainly focused on sushi and other Japanese-inspired entrees.

When I say surprised, I mean deceived by my expectations and surprised by my reality. I have walked by Hotel Nikko hundreds of times, but when I entered their lobby space, I was completely blown away by the ornate marble floor to ceiling. Even more beautiful was their newly remodeled restaurant, adorned in hues of blue and a fun atmosphere with house music coming from their live DJ. I instantly knew that I should call the dog sitter and let them know I would be home late.

A friendly host showed us to our “table” of comfy sofas and end tables pushed together to accommodate our group, which easily made us feel at home. Orders were taken quickly, drinks came flying out, and the show was on a roll. I hate to admit, with the relaxed environment, fun music, and tasty drinks flowing, we quickly became the loudest group in the spot. However, once food arrived, it was dead silent as we could not stop chewing.

Sushi 9/10, drinks 10/10, but the real winner was the lamb. I would CRIME for that lamb again. We ended up ordering 6 orders for the group of 7 of us. Keep in mind that each order came with 4 pieces. It was slightly sweet, but smoky at the same time. The sweetness is almost more of caramelized glaze, reminiscent of fish sauce, maybe? All I know is I could eat that lamb once a week, and would never tire.

We finished the meal out with a flight of desserts and a flight of cocktails. All in all, we were there for 3 ½ hours of overeating, overdrinking, and an amazing time with friends. If you are looking for a fun spot to gather with friends after work or have a fun date night, Kanpai should be on your list.

An authentic Japanese dining experience in the heart of San Francisco!
The food was fresh, beautifully prepared, and full of flavor. The chef’s attention to detail truly elevated the experience – every bite felt like a work of art. Eitan, our server, was incredible – friendly, attentive, and full of great recommendations that made our night even better.
The vibe was stylish and welcoming. Highly recommend the sushi and drinks– a perfect balance of taste and presentation.
Can’t wait to come back again. Thank you for a memorable evening!

I wish I could give this restaurant 10 starts review. Great and outstanding food and atmosphere, but what truly impressed me is high quality service from staff. We had Deepak and William as our waiters and they did amazing job. I would highly recommend this restaurant to all my friends from San Francisco.
Thank you Kanpai Sushi Lounge team!

I stopped in at KANPAI for a quick, light bite during my stay at Hotel Nikko and WOW! Their food really blew me away.

I got the ahi poke bowl and the tuna was absolute perfection. It was lightly seasoned so the fish really shone through and the texture was melt-in-your-mouth delicious – reminded me of Sugarfish in LA. I’m already planning to go back for another bowl and to try some of their other dishes!

Food is good. Service is good. Decor and vibe generally good too. A friend and I ate here, was pretty expensive for 2. However the lobster rolls and crab rolls were excellent and the sushi/sashimi was fresh and delicious.

The cocktails were not good. They tasted cheap and imbalanced. My yuzu sour tasted like pour lemon juice with no sweetness and the egg white foam looked like sad bath water. I didn’t drink it but still paid the exorbitant price. The waitress was very disinterested in providing service and was not happy that we wanted to pay separately on our hotel rooms – something pretty standard considering the number of our business colleagues staying at the same hotel.
