I live close by and have frequented the shop countless times because the bagels themselves are good and it is convenient. That said, each time it is a disappointment for one reason or another.
Their staff is entirely made up of teenagers who could not care less about their jobs. This is expected, but the owners literally sit on their stools and do absolutely nothing about it. The wait time is unreasonable, even if you place an order to pick up you are stuck there for 20 minutes waiting for someone to hand you a bag and make you pick your own drink.
Then, you go home with your food and it is either made incorrectly or carelessly. Today, I ordered 2 sandwiches, both with 2 eggs, one with crispy bacon and one with cheddar cheese.
I received one egg practically uncooked bacon, and American cheese on both sandwiches. Both sandwiches weee thrown together like slop. Naturally, I was charged for 2 eggs on both. This is unacceptable and again, just the latest example as something goes wrong every single time I am there.
I genuinely wish this and all of the latest reviews highlighting the poor quality and service impacts their business, because they really are doing so well because of an undeserved award and reputation and don’t care about their customers in the least bit. I will be driving a bit further to get my breakfast from now on. If you need other businesses at which to spend your hard earned money, consider: My Three Sons on Covert Avenue, A&S in Franklin Square, Slim’s in Bayside.
Take a morning walk around this block of Hillside Avenue and get wrapped in aroma of culinary magic-in-making.
Reasonable selection of bagels {may not be as diverse as leading bakers in NYC} & schmears at hand, they specialize in sandwiches. The bagels are bigger, puffed to perfection; and if you go for sandwich option, be prepared to put your jaws through a pain free, range of motion {Maximum Interincisal Opening} test ☺️.
To make a more detached judgement, we got our bagel snob friend to savor the fare. There also, the verdict was aaahhh, ummm! Everest scaled!
The staff always appears to have a convival spirit. We were well served by David on the last visit; who also did a quick course correction for a flub I did in placing the order.
HR is a takeout-only establishment, located on a 5 store-front strip. To fully realize the real potential of their fare, we hope HR opens bite-in option in the adjacent premises, now (as of 09/2025) papered-up.
Highlight Reel:: Ice cubes in HR cold coffee are frozen from the same brew. Which means, melt does not dilute consistency; experience stays what you walk out with.
We called ahead and so glad we did bc there was a long line. But that’s pretty standard for NY bagel shops. Still had a bit of a wait but wasn’t to bad, for our food in 15 mins like they said on the phone.
We ordered two sesame bagels and one egg and cheese bagel. Both tasted phenomenal. As well as an iced French vanilla coffee which was pretty good as well. Overall the food here is 10/10 for sure.
