I read the reviews and was super excited to try the pizza. Especially because I’ve not seen Sicilian style pies anywhere else in Maine. So yeah, I drove an hour to check the place out, fully expecting to wait some 30-45 minutes for a good bake and solid experience.
I walk in, confused by the layout as it has part defunct gas station vibes with drink coolers from the 80s with a hodgepodge of things inside, some with dates and list of ingredients, some things without, and zero seating.
I order the pie. Was told it’ll be like 12 minutes. I’m confused but go along with it. Sat on the bench to wait, then saw the woman go behind the drink coolers and pull out a fully precooked crust. I should have walked out at that point, but figured, that I’ve already paid and the reviews can’t be that far off…
There was then bickering about employee matters between the two owners, a phone call about getting someone their Maine license so that they can get their marijuana card, and a sporadic shouting at Alexa to start and stop timers and music.
Whatever. Pizza comes out, smells decent, and I make the trip home. Once I get home, I get to see the pizza and yeah…. Cheap cheese that doesn’t adhere whatsoever, a tragically small number of toppings for the price (jalapenos were added by me at home as I tried to doctor it up), and overall just a sad representation of what is certainly not Sicilian style pizza.
Flavor wise, it’s just ok. Sauce isn’t bad, but the low quality of the cheese and the texture of the precooked crust just ruin any potential that was there. The only reason that I’m still reluctantly making my way through the pizza is because it is calories, and over $30 worth at that.
I’m all for supporting small restaurants, but if they’re going to represent, they need to show up where it matters – in the wallet (value) or at the plate.
