I went by myself and sat at the sushi bar. Asked for recommendations and the lady helping me was genuinely kind. She hit me with “it depends on what you like,” which I actually respected because it’s true. No fake upsell, just real guidance.
She suggested the salmon appetizer—salmon carpaccio (I might be butchering the name), and they also gave me a little fried calamari to try. The sushi master behind the bar was cool like that. Everything tasted crazy fresh.
Then I ordered the king salmon special sushi… and yeah, it was one of the best I’ve had. Smooth, fresh, just perfectly done. 5/5. I’m definitely coming back. Props to the sushi master too, he even offered me some jellyfish to try. I was already full, but that’s the kind of hospitality that stands out.
Sushi and sashimi was very good well prepared
Also the noodles with shrimp were very good
Big portion good quality price not so high .
Probably not very nice inside but good enough
The first problem we had started almost immediately after walking in. I have asthma that is pretty easily triggered by mold, and something in the restaurant set it off badly. At first I wasn’t sure what was happening, because I couldn’t smell anything wrong, but I felt awful and lightheaded, like I couldn’t take a full breath. I got up to go to the restroom and passed through another section of the restaurant that smelled very musty/mildewy, and at that point I started having a full asthma attack. We had already ordered, though, so my partner told me that he would have them box everything up and that he’d meet me in the car and we could just eat there. I was disappointed (again, I was very excited to be going out, and having the date cut short by an asthma attack is an incredibly stressful way to end it), but I definitely couldn’t stay, so I agreed. We ate in the car; the food was decent, but I was too focused on trying to catch my breath to enjoy it. I do remember thinking that it was kind of bland.
Unfortunately, it turned out that bland food was the least of our problems.
By the next morning, my partner was already starting to feel sick. (For the record: he didn’t have any raw fish, but we think it must have been the gyoza that he ordered; it’s the only thing he got that I didn’t touch, and I felt fine.) By 4:30pm, he was calling me at work, asking me to come home because something was wrong. By the time I got home, he was vomiting. He spent most of his night in the bathroom, and I spent most of my night trying to coax him into taking sips of water (when he wasn’t otherwise occupied) so that he wouldn’t get completely dehydrated and end up in the hospital. The stomach cramping was so bad that he wasn’t able to fall asleep until nearly midnight, and even then, it wasn’t a comfortable sleep. The next morning, he felt a bit better, but before 4pm he was asking me to come home again because he just couldn’t keep food down and he could barely get off the couch. (I made broth. Lots of broth.) He finally felt mostly better by day three, and was even able to keep down some mild food, but he was completely exhausted and couldn’t go into work. He is also self-employed, which means that he lost all productivity for three days, and which officially makes this the most expensive date we’ve ever gone on.
I’ve heard good things about this place. The staff seemed pleasant, the food was decent, and I generally don’t like writing bad reviews about small businesses. But this was a truly awful experience for us both, and I don’t want anyone else to go through something similar. Choose your dinner carefully.
For our main course, we went with the Chef’s Special Pick-3 Roll option. Every roll was fresh, expertly prepared, and absolutely delicious. The quality of the seafood really stood out , super fresh and flavorful.
What made the experience even better were the thoughtful extras. The staff brought out a complimentary calamari appetizer (which was amazing!) and surprised us at the end with fresh watermelon as a light, refreshing dessert.
Service was warm and attentive, and the vibe of the place was relaxed but refined. Overall, Red Plum is a must-visit spot if you’re in Sarasota and love sushi or modern Asian cuisine. We’ll definitely be back when we visit again
