The baos had good overall flavor and the buns themselves were pillowy, soft, and nicely steamed. That said, the fillings were a bit disappointing. There was not much meat in the baos, and while the flavors were there, the meat itself was dry and slightly chewy.
The kimchi, however, was excellent. It was properly fermented, spicy, tangy, and garlicky with a nice crunch.
The egg fried rice was not good. The peas were discolored and there was an unpleasant acrid taste, as if part of the rice had burned and been mixed back in. It was off putting enough that we did not finish it.
Overall, there are some good ideas here and the kimchi stood out, but the execution was inconsistent. Between the dry meat and the poor fried rice, it is unlikely we will return.
Corn dog – not good
Bao buns – not good
Cashier – could not understand cash payment of $52 for a $41.73 bill, had to coach her on how to give me change. My wife said to be sure to mention she was nice, so she doesn’t get in trouble. So I guess kindness is an acceptable substitute for competence.
I regret ordering food here. I still lose sleep over it.
I had the steamed pork banh mi and the BBQ pork banh mi (w/ two eggs added). While there are clearly some differences from what I’m used to from a traditional banh mi (the shape and flavor profile of the cucumbers and daikon/carrot, the style of baguette, the type of pate, etc), I can’t deny that they are DELICIOUS!
Edit: went back again and had the k-pop dog, which is a Korean corn dog (I got mine stuffed with half-mozz half-hot dog) with krab salad on top and it was also amazing!!
I forgot to take pictures not expecting to leave a mid review but I am wrong. I promise I’ll be back and will take before pictures but as you can see, my meal didn’t stand a chance.
You need to eat at this place. This will be my new go to so I need this place to succeed and stick around. Brick and mortar, food trucks, multiple locations, anything just stick around!
*** edited and updated…. the very next day we went back. I got pictures this time. Don’t take my word for it, go and experience this tasteful bliss
