The best feature of this restaurant is undoubtedly its terrace, which offers a stunning view of Old Harbor and is part of a stylish inn that boasts a true New England maritime ambiance, reminiscent of a scene from a movie. The sight of ships sailing and the gentle ocean breeze create an unforgettable setting. Another highlight was the service; the friendly staff were eager to share stories about the island, significantly enhancing our dining experience. While the food was comforting and good, it leaned towards basic comfort food and didn’t quite live up to the extraordinary location or the rather steep prices. Despite the cuisine not being particularly outstanding, the combination of the breathtaking view, refreshing breeze, and exceptional service makes this a place we would gladly revisit for a comforting meal.

Excellent Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich! Great Clam Chowder! Tasty Mixed Drinks!!! Caesar Salad was good. Swordfish Tacos with tortilla chips were alright. Service (Emily from Mass) was great, she was prompt, smart and knowledgeable about the food. She had a friendly demeanor about her that made us feel comfortable and happy on the last day of the season. Would recommend 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Food was excellent. We’ve had swordfish in many restaurants and it seems some just have it down – this one def. does. Moist, delicious, flavorful. Nice sized piece. My husband’s meatballs were also great.
The waiter was an absolute sweetheart.
Atmosphere – you feel like you are in a time warp. Building is classic old New England. Nice view of harbor.

$27 Caesar salad + $2 wrap = $29? That’s not lunch, that’s daylight robbery.
My wife asked for a simple Chicken Caesar Wrap—with grilled chicken, not fried. She’s not asking for caviar or truffle oil, just grilled chicken. The poor waitress, bless her, came back and said “the chef won’t do grilled.” Mind you, grilled chicken is literally… grilling. No lobsters involved.
Then a manager swoops in and says the chief likes things done his way, and that they have to “draw a line somewhere.” Are you kidding me? Talk about drawing lines around a kitchen door.
But wait—they can grill the chicken on a Caesar salad, and even add it to a wrap for us to assemble ourselves. Nice flexibility… except they slam us with a $27 salad and a $2 “wrap.” Yep, they charged us for the tortilla we assembled ourselves.
And another guy in our group ordered the Tap & Grill Burger with bacon ($27) and asked for it medium. Our waitress had to deliver the news: “patties are thin—can’t cook to order.” Simple cooking 101: flip it, done. Even Burger King holds to that standard. Get your cook in line he’s not Gorden Ramsay.

Sept. 14. 2025 we stopped in at the Tap &Grill in the early afternoon after the aroma from the restaurant reached us on the sidewalk. Our server promptly and politely himself as Zach while providing a couple ice cold waters. He then proceeded to provide us with a few minutes to review the menu. Upon hearing that we were Bloody Mary connoisseurs he directed our attention toward the menu listing for the cocktail he suggested we try. HE WAS 100% CORRECT!! The lunches we had were absolutely delicious. The service provided by this young man was so amazing that it added to our enjoyment of the island. We strongly recommend that island visitors make it a point to visit this establishment!!!!

The restaurant accommodated our group of 26 people. Our two waiters were amazing. They were always there when we needed something. They literally thought of everything! The food was exceptional too! But really I can say enough about the waiters!

The National has a lot to offer! Inside and outside dining options, seasonal live music out back by the firepits, the menu has something for everyone. Salads, fish, steak plus a full bar. The porch bar offers great cocktails, their Mudslide is a must try as is their Bloody Mary. Watch the ferry come and go from the bar and be happy with your choice.

The food at The National was fantastic! My favorite was the lobster salad! It was so light and delicious perfect for a nice lunch before exploring and there was a ton of lobster! The clam chowder was also fantastic and I highly recommend it!
Definitely stop by for a meal while on Block Island you will not be disappointed!

Excellent location with a great view of the ocean. I would highly recommend if you come to Block Island to make a stop here for a meal. We read about the history of the restaurant and hotel while we were there. The lobster salad was delicious.
