Excessive 25% “Service Charge” for Counter-Style Service

I recently visited with a group of 9 seniors, and while we enjoyed the food, the service policy was extremely disappointing. Even though we were a large party, there was no table-side payment service; instead, our entire group (of SENIORS) was required to stand in a long line to pay our checks separately at the counter.

Despite this ‘self-service’ payment experience, the restaurant automatically added a 25% gratuity to every bill. While I understand automatic gratuity for large groups is common, 25% is well above the standard 18-20% industry average—especially when customers are doing the administrative work of standing in line to pay.

If you are coming with a large group, be aware that you will be charged a premium service fee regardless of the actual level of service provided. Check your receipts carefully!

We came to Sal’s Pizzeria in Stanardsville originally just planning to grab some pizza after a hike—but the menu looked so good, we ended up ordering everything else! The owner was incredibly kind and welcoming, which made us feel right at home.

There were great options for everyone in our group, and everything we tried was delicious. Our favorites were the chicken cutlet parmigiana and the fried pickles, which were a super tasty surprise. We finished with a tiramisu that was the perfect sweet ending to an amazing meal. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area!

Sal’s is affordable with huge portions. The calamari was a bit overcooked, the meat lovers pizza had a ton of toppings but a bit underdone. Sal’s uses a screen to bake their pizza instead of using just the stone in the pizza oven. If they used more than 1 screen it would allow the dough to fully cook and add more caramelization of the under carriage of the pizza.
The antipasto salad was good (the quality olive oil served on the side was a nice touch). The veal Parmesan was very tender. The sauce on the pasta was good but the pasta was overcooked. Veal prices are expensive so for the price it was a good deal.
The cannoli and cheesecake very good. (Actually the best part of the meal).
The service was attentive and efficient.
The atmosphere was pleasant but missing something. Background music is an industry norm so when a restaurant is not jam packed it doesn’t sound like a library.
Sal’s overall is good but could be much better.

Came hungry after long hike in Shenandoah. Affordable, large portions, great taste. Chicken parm and fried pickles were awesome – would definitely recommend. Beyond they food, they had $4 beers and really nice staff. We had a very enjoyable time.

Also a bonus… gum-ball machine.

We were just passing through Stanardsville while driving the Skyline drive. We order a large Calzone, fried pickles, and a Greek salad. The calzone was huge, cooked well, and filled. The salad was large, fresh, and filled. Fried pickles were on point. Staff was amazing and provided plenty of sauces and dressing without me having to ask. Very pleasantly surprised. I’d go back if I were ever in the area again. There are few options in this town and this place would stand out in any other large town.

Smallest Sal’s I’ve ever visited, but service and food was delicious which is we chose to eat at Sal’s.

I love coming here for the nostalgia! I ate here with my parents as a kid. I worked here as a teenager. Now I enjoy dinner here with my family. My favorite is their Tuesday Night Pizza Special! I hope they have many more years to come. I believe they are, currently, the only sit down pizza restaurant in Greene County. Good Job guys! Keep it going!

Ordered pizza and the siciliano sub. Food was ready to be picked up pretty quick. Pizza was okay, not the best but I would have it again if I was back in the area. Sub was great, had steak, pepperoni, and Italian sausage shredded together and was very tasty.
