The sandwich was a decent size with onions, cheese, meat, and peppers. I actually liked the toasted sesame bun the most, it was probably the best part of the whole sandwich. The meat is supposed to be wagyu, but honestly I couldn’t really tell. The grilled onions on mine were mostly burnt, which was pretty disappointing. Felt like there wasn’t much quality control going on.
I also ordered their beef tallow chips. They were thin and crispy, which I liked, but my bag only had maybe 10 chips inside, felt kind of skimpy.
Overall the sandwich was good, but nothing spectacular. For almost $35 for a sandwich and chips, I expected a lot more. I’ve definitely had better cheesesteaks for way less money. Glad I tried it, but I probably won’t be rushing back. In my opinion, HiHo is way better for the price.
I finally made it inside and the space is shared by a hamburger kitchen and the cheesesteak kitchen. Two separate lines for two separate businesses. This created a bit of confusion for some customers who got in line for the wrong kitchen. They were a man trying to ensure people were in the right lines but it’s hard to manage a line of 40+ people waiting in the sun.
I finally got to order the Matu signature cheesesteak with the long pepper but without onions. I also got a bag of their home-made wagyu chips. I was able to find indoor seating which was surprising by how long the line was. I had to wait about 15 minutes or so before my food was ready.
The first bit was surprisingly spicy! That long pepper is sweet but has enough kick to take over the whole sandwich. I settled into the flavor and really enjoyed the sandwich. The wagyu chips were so good! I enjoyed the sandwich a lot and the same man who was trying to get the line sorted was checking on customers at their tables which was nice. I left happy and full.
Now, would I go back?? Definitely maybe. I paid $32 for a sandwich and some chips. I got a water cup so no extra charge for that but was it worth it? Maybe if I didn’t have to wait in line for 25 minutes, then another 15 minutes for my food. But I did wait, and that lessened the experience for me. I enjoyed the food but waiting 40 minutes for a sandwich that while is good, wasn’t the best cheesesteak I had. I’ll go back if I’m in the area, and there is no line AND if I’m craving a cheesesteak. But I’m not going out of my way for this pricey sandwich.
100 percent grass fed Wagyu from New Zealand, Cooper Sharp cheese, grilled onions, and that roasted long hot pepper all working together on a toasted sesame roll. Simple, but executed right.
The house chips fried in Wagyu tallow were clean and crisp.
Mexican Coke sealed the deal.
Verdict:
Straight up delicious. I will be back.
People should be warned about 6% fee !!
Sandwich is $24, potato chip is $4, mexico coke bottle is $4.25, total for $38 for a Sandwich!! And im not even served by servers.
The price is Beverly hills and food is a regular sandwich.
2nd attempt went at 1:25PM friday, line was to the big tree, from there was 45 minutes to place an order. they only have one guy on one register placing orders with no sense of urgency. another 20-25 minutes to receive my to-go order (2 matu cheesesteaks). there are 2 people cooking food. 2 other guys i assume from management walking around observing, delegating, occasionally offering ice water to people standing in line under the sun.
food: overall tasty, bread is really good and whats sets its apart/different from other cheesesteaks. as for the wagyu, you can’t tell (for reference ive eaten plenty of kobe and A5 japanese wagyu from US and japan, american wagyu, australian/new zealand/italian wagyu that i lost count so i am very familiar with what it should taste like). the hot pepper is great/could do more of it, onions more on minimal side but fine (wasnt burnt like the other review).
price: ridiculous. all in came out to $56.22 or $28.11 each which includes the sales tax and 6% fee they charge , i assume for “employee health benefits”
ambiance: small shared space with hilo burger. there is a complimentary ice and water dispenser. 2 decently clean bathrooms in the back.
overall: food is good but not amazing, you’re not missing out if you decide its not worth the time and price for you. if it was $15-20 all in itd be more reasonable n long line tolerable but for the price its just not worth it for me, perhaps it is for you. having said that, if someone else went out to get some and treated me i wouldnt turn it down either. lol ive had way better cheesesteaks for way less from SF and philly so i know what a great cheesesteak takes like. glad i tried it though.
