Definitely a college bar. The bathroom had puke all over the place and was pretty gross.

Went there to relax on my only day off from work. Minding my own business however acknowledging people when they acknowledged me was approach by a young man and said he had numerous complaints about my harassing people so I told him that was rediculous and I asked to speak with the manager and they declined allowing me to do so . For the one night I was trying to relax. My night got ruined. All in all I was very disappointed and will be sharing this experience with all my friends. I know a lot of people that would be interested in this story and I will more than likely be reporting them to the better business bureau. And the health department. It stunk to high heaven in there as well. A huge disappointment it turned out to be on my only day off. I used the restroom while there abd there was human feces on the seat.

If I could give this place zero stars I would. We never got our food after waiting over an hour. The workers were rude and not helpful. They seemed put out to have to work. Even as a college bar, the atmosphere was extremely dirty. I will never be back.

terrible service/terrible atmosphere

Poorly run by management… My student org hosted a joint fundraising event with the Riv in September of 2024, where the Riv agreed to collect all cover and donations and give them to out organization. The bouncers and bar staff did not collect cover from everyone, and actually refused to accept donations when our members attempted to donate. I am really disappointed in the Riv, and to add on, the Riv never answers their phones or gives you a call back after you leave a message. Our org now has a rule to never hold events at the Riv. We prefer Landshark or any other bar in EL, where the management and staff hold true to their agreements and run their business with intergity, transparency, and are effective communicators.

Hopefully the Riv changes the way they are organized soon. If you are a campus organization, don’t look to host your event at the Riv.

I can’t blame the service….they’re serving a “pre-mixed” product. But to charge $9 for a long Island, then serve me a pitcher of sugary water, 0% ABV? Simply unacceptable.

Edit/message to owner: thanks for assuring me with your “internal review”. If you really cared you’d offer me a refund Until then we won’t be coming back!

The Riv has one of the most inviting and welcoming environments of any bar in east lansing. All the staff show the upmost respect for all of their customers. My only issue is the other day a group of women were being very aggressive towards the DJ and calling him names because they wouldn’t play some rapper named Tee Grizzley. They then proceeded to argue with staff and call them words that I do not feel comfortable typing out. Security promptly removed them from the bar which made everyone feel much safer as they were getting very aggressive and confrontational. I will definitely be coming back!

Everything about a college bar but with clean bathrooms, the chillest A/C, and the best fries I ever had!
The guys and gals bartending are always amazing!!
Its a great scene to unwind after a long day; let loose on the dance floor; or just have a beer with company at happy hour while finishing virtual classes.

My friend arrived less than 10 minutes before me, and she paid the cover for me to get in. When I showed my ID and said my friend paid my cover, I was told that’s not how it works. I asked for my ID back and was told I wouldn’t get it back unless I paid $5 or left. When my friend came out to explain the situation, the bouncer put both of his hands on her and tried to push her out of ther bar even after she told him she had stuff inside and would call the police. This bouncer who was collecting money took his position to his head. He was unbelievable rude and aggressive toward us even though we had paid the cover and were both over 21 and made no threats towards him. After standing outside in the cold, management finally let me in, but this was unacceptable and a violation of my rights to without my ID only because I said I would not immediately leave. He is a shame to this establishment and this needs to be addressed. A bouncer who unprovoked puts his hands on a patron, should not still have a job. Please do better.

I am very impressed with the efficiency of the staff and how they can handle such a large crowd and still provide personalized service, however there was just one thing that I could not overlook.

There was no line for the men’s restroom, which is totally usual for a bar, and a huge line for the women’s. As a dude, many girls use the guy’s restroom, which I have no problem with. We are all people, and we all need to piss after a couple pitchers of beer; however when girls attempted to use the men’s restroom, which had no line and open stalls, a bouncer literally peered into the men’s bathroom looking for people with long hair and proceeded to kick them out of the bar with no sympathy.

We are all people and deserve to relieve ourselves as soon as the moment arises. I hope they resolve this in the future and either expand their women’s restrooms or make efforts so that all people’s can relieve themselves when Mother Nature calls.

Don’t let this distract from the fun atmosphere and great service, the bartenders are awesome and friendly and this was one of my favorite bars and it is sad that I have to post anything negative about them. Great staff and great people.
