I’ve lived here for four years now and the usual birria spots around here are hit and miss. I’ve tried some brick and mortar spots, and a few birria trucks, like the one on Atlantic in Bixby Knolls, the one on Cherry that sets up by Superior market, and the one on Artesia by the Big Saver market. There was also a spot where the Shomi Noods used to be on Altantic and Artesia, don’t know of it’s still there because I never went back. Plus a few others that aren’t worth mentioning.
Anyway, some of these places are okay, some are just bad, and all of them are inconsistent. Sometimes the broth is good but the meat is tough, sometimes the meat is soft but the broth is bland, and sometimes it’s neither.
At birrieria Canelos the meat is perfectly soft and tender, and the broth is delicious, unlike any other I’ve tried around this area. Their tacos are also delicious, I tried the birria de chivo tacos and the labio (beef lips), and they were bomb. The salsas are also fire! The red spicy one, the salsa macha, the green salsa, and the habanero salsa are all spicy and flavorful.
One last thing that I feel is usually overlooked: the limes. Props to this place for serving limes that are actually juicy! Some places have limes that are hard and dry, no juice at all, and some cut them in weird ways that prevent you from squeezing the juice out properly (you all know exactly what I’m taking about, lol), like dumb little triangles or super thin slices. Just cut them in four or five normal slices, that’s all you have to do.
I highly recommend this place, and I will for sure be going back as my go-to birria spot from now on. Before this, I would literally drive to East LA to get birria at Don Boni’s or tacos from Birrieria La Única. I will still visit those places when I’m around the area, but here in Long Beach Birrieria Canelos is my new favorite spot!
