Having traveled the world and with a refined pallet I can say unequivocally that my breakfast at Heidi’s Old Main Café in Adams, ND was the best dining experience I have ever had anywhere in the world. Heidi and her staff were friendly and although her establishment was packed I was quickly seated at the cozy bar where a piping hot cup of Columbian coffee was waiting. The décor was vintage, tasteful and authentic reminding me of my youth growing up on a North Dakota farm not far from Adams.

In short order my eggs over medium, generous portion of corn fed ham steak and homemade white bread toasted to perfection with just the right amount of fresh butter was delivered to my more than comfortable bar stool with all the standard condiments including homespun jams of all flavors. I immediately began to shamelessly devour and with no regard for my finishing school manners what can only be described as a little bit of heaven in less time than I care to admit.

Before I had time to request a warm-up of my coffee Heidi was there to fill my cup with a genuine and heartwarming smile, a smile just like my dear mummy would give me after I would milk the cows, slop the hogs and feed the chickens just before I left home for my seven mile walk to the one room school house where I would stoke the wood burning stove before the students or schoolmarm would arrive for our daily studies.

So as quick as my morning at Heidi’s began it was time to pay my modest bill and after leaving a generous tip I quietly bid my farewells to Heidi, her chef and the entire staff just in time for my driver to bring the carriage around for my departure.

Although I am uncertain when I will be able to return to Heidi’s for what I hope will be a dinner next time I am confident I will return as quickly as I can make the arrangements so until then I will savor the memory until such time that I return.

Sincerely,

B.L F III
